_ Sunglasses, Hats & Bowties Story and Photographs by David Carswell On Wednesday, August 21, 100 children from Geraldton, Marathon, Manitouwadge, Schreiber and Terrace Bay participated in the first annual North Shore Recreation Director Pool Fun Day. The purpose of the event was to allow youngsters in various communities along the North Shore to gather together and meet new friends as well as have the opportunity to use a heated pool. Blessed with good weather the events began at 10 a.m. The mammoth task of supervising the par- ticipants was handled by at least 2 leaders from each" of the-participating communities and the staff of the Terrace Bay Pool: Shelley Dick, Jody Bertin, Cur- tis Evoy, Tammy Trach, Danny O'Keefe, Karen . Fournier and Gord Lange. Some of the many events that took place during the day included a Cannonball contest, water dodge ball, greased watermelon football, water balloon toss, belly-flop and diving contest, a mini-triathlon and a Giant Whirlpool, where all of the participants got into a circle, ran and created a whirlpool. The theme of the day was "Sunglasses, Hats & Bowties'" and some of the combinations worn by the supervisors were a sight to be seen. The day was an enormous success and future plans call for the event to be repeated every year, moving from community to community. Next year 20 Terrace Bay youngsters will travel to a pool in another 'North Shore community.
