Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, July 17, 1985, page 7 Bill Legrand '*And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the houses where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Ho- ly Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them ut- terance.'" Acts 2: 1-21 (RSV.) Years ago as a deacon in the Anglican Church, I startled a congregation at the 8:00 a.m. celebration of Holy Communion. Nor- mally, this small, gathered community in the early morning were noted for their quiet devotion, devoid of music or startling revelations. I spoke slowly and distinctly. "My friends, I want us-to welcome the Season of Pentecost with one. declaration: We Anglicans are part of the Pentecostal Church." This certainly gained their atten- tion, and offered me the opportunity to share one of the greatest gifts given to the Christian Church, through God's_ Holy Spirit...the gift of speaking in tongues. to mankind. Thank You "ALL" No words spoken or written can describe our appreciation and thanks to our relatives, friends and neighbours for the enjoyable celebration of Our Golden Wedding Anniversary, July 4th. With "Hearts of Gold" you attended Mass in our honour, foods, gave gifts, (no gifts were requested), and showered us with good wishes and congratulations. You made the Day, a milestone in our lives, which can never be duplicated or forgotten. Some travelled great distances to be with us for the Day. To all, we owe a debt of the deepest gratitude of mankind To our daughter, Colleen who sparked the event and all of her willing helpers we give special thanks. We would like to list all of the helpers names but fear we might inadvertently miss someone who helped. So thank you all and may God Bless You Always. Sincerely Jos and Ray Kenney Our friends in the denomination known as the Pentecostal Church have done a mighty service for all Christians, by stressing the importance of tongues as a biblical gift. Today, charismatics are found in most Christian denomina- tions. It's a gift we cannot deny, for it brings with it a message for others from the Heavenly Father himself, as revealed in Jesus Christ. Not all Chris- tians are given the gift of tongues. We all have gifts given to us by God, and tongues are but one of many. While my ex- periences with Pentecostals and other charismatic Christians have been in- spiring and fulfilling, I have never received the gift of tongues. This hasn't made me-- or others who are not charismatic -- any less Christians. However, I've felt this gift, so often maligned by Christians, is important to identify as an essential part of the Body of Jesus Christ, His One Church on earth. Their charismatic witness reminds us of Joel 2: 28-32, where God reveals to the prophet, "that I will pour out my spirit on all Flesh; your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions..."' On realizing that the crowd felt the apostles were intox- icated, Peter used Joel's message to prove the value of tongues. Jesus anticipates the coming of His Holy Spirit ("The Comforter" or '*Counsellor") in John 15: 26-27, as he says to his disciples, "but when the Counsellor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning... "From this coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts, arrives the Body of Jesus Christ, His Church as a witness to the world. Not all charismatics use the gift of tongues in accordance with God's will. In many of Paul's let- ters to churches, he claim- ed they were abusing the gift...especially where it was identified as the primary gift or a sign that a Christian "had arrived"' at a high point in his ministry. Satan or forces of evil can use tongues to draw others away from the message of Jesus Christ. Tongues must always be tested out by others in a Christian community, and should reflect biblical teaching. Many of us who don't That's Easy Hauler Trailers Contour Paddle Boats 1-800-465-3309 have the gift of tongues are inspired and directed by the Holy Spirit. Through him we are called _ into fellowship with others to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour to the world. In our sacraments of Baptism, Holy Orders, Unction, etc...the laying on of hands signifies the em- powering of the Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide us in our spiritual journeys as Christians. These sacraments must never be seen as magical or superstitious...the un- biblical notion that the Ho- ly Spirit empowers us on- ly through sacramental rites. In the Anglican tradi- tion, the Service of Heal- ing (pp584-587, Book of Common Prayer (BLP)) calls upon God's Holy Spirit to heal others both spiritually and physically according to God's Will, as expressed in Jesus Christ. In our new season of Pentecost, we remember the dramatic way in which Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to us, and gave some of us the charismatic gift of tongues. Pentecost points to ways in which the Holy Spirit guides and inspires all churches within the ' Body of Jesus Christ. This previous ex- perience could be the deciding factor that finally gets you the job that you think is ideal for you. Before you embark on your job search, decide at the outset to be determin- ed, optimistic, and flexible.
