Paul obvious- ly identified our spiritual enemy for who he was... the Devil and all his works. While Jesus was in the Wilderness (Matt. 4:1-11), I don't believe he was tested by his own will and desire, but by Satanic presence, or a strong force of evil. Among mainline chur- ches, there has been a growing tendency to allegorize Satan, to make of him a means to explain the evil state of this world. This is understandable, for we must never give SATAN a great deal of publicity, short of recognizing his powers and how he can undermine our faith and response to Jesus 408 Scotia Street schreiber, Ontario POT 2S0 FREE DELIVERY for Schreiber and Terrace Bay 'Did You Know? = 4. eit We can make an arrangement to suit your taste = lowers' n "Things * 824-2743 or 1 824-2574 (ers) «Porth DRYCLEANING SERVICES PHOTO PRINTS -- TERRACE BAY ~. As well, some Christian communities ad- dress Satan in so many cir- cumstances, that his presence can become a convenient excuse for not allowing us to take respon- sibility for our own spiritual lives. A lady I once met had serious psychological problems. Her Christian friends claimed that psychiatrists were really Satanists and that she would be cured through weekly exorcisms. This approach to Satanism caused this woman to end up on a ward in a psychiatric hospital, con- fused and bewildered about reality. There is a need not to dabble in Satanic research, unless we are spiritually prepared and can discern what is Satanic and what is psychological. Psychiatrists and psychologists are essential to the mental health of our society, and should never be undermined by en- thusiastic '*Devil-Bashers"' who can cause more harm than good. Movies such as The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby do a great disservice to our serious attempts to identify Satanic power in our lives. While these films have a note of realism, they excite and frighten people. They also give Satan far too much power...a power that is broken by. the light of Jesus' love for us. However, the mainline churches do sometimes become trapped in their allegorization of SATAN. For many liberal Christians it is unthinkable that the devil could exist because (for them) angels are simp- ly relics of medieval mythology. Since the Scriptures describe Lucifer as a fallen angel, it follows that SATAN is a carry over from the supernatural ex- cesses of an earlier age in the Church. The problem is that angels do exist and have been recorded in the earliest accounts of the Gospels. SATAN is not a - creature, with horns and hoofs, from the Medieval Church, but a presence known to Christians from the earliest years of the Church. (minus his silly, theatrical costume!!) When Paul calls on us to put on the whole armour of God, he's opposing what early Christians knew to exist as their enemy - SATAN. We may describe Satan as the evil in this world; we may avoid his name and authority; but, we must acknowledge that evil ex- ists, that our world is threatened by this form which destroys peace and promotes disharmony. Noted theologians and Biblical scholars like C.S. Lewis and J.B. Phillips have warned churches to not ignore the presence of Satan in the world. The late J.B. Phillips described this Satanic presence in his work, Ring of Truth: "The forces of evil are in opposition to the will of God. And the nearer a man's will approaches God's, the more apparent and stronger and more for- midable this opposition is seen to be. It is only when we are going in more or less the same direction as the devil, that we are un- conscious of any opposition at all." (p. 37). This is not to say that all forms of stress, conflict and anxie- ty, which we.experience in our spiritual journeys, are Satanic. We do need to claim. responsibilities for our own lives. However, when this opposition is consistent and unrelenting, there is a form of evil which is behind this pressure... especially if we're trying to follow the Will of God in our lives. Paul doesn't call on us to engage in battles with the Devil. On the contrary, he tells us to wear the full ar- mour of God, the articles of faith and prayer, to grow in our relationship with the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. In an atmosphere of sincere prayer and Fellowship with Jesus Christ, the power of a" Satan or Evil ceases to have meaning for us, as_ in- dividual Christians within a community. The warfare we wage is spiritual... as our spirituality deepens, evil becomes less and less threatening. Kimberly contributions to list.
