Caffeine As with the discovery of many other drugs, the biological effects of caf- feine were first noted as a result of the observance of animal behavior. Shepherds found that their ' goats remained awake and active at night after eating the berries of a local plant. This observation led a prior in an Arabian mosque to use the inner beans to prepare a beverage, which when consumed. helped to maintain wakefulness dur- ing the long nights of prayer. The early beverage was called Kahweh, which translated literally means "'that which stimulates", Human use of caffeine, the chemical substance that kept both the prior and the goats awake predates even legend. Before the Arabs brewed coffee or the Chinese steeped their first pot of tea, Stone Age peo- ple are believed to have made beverages from caf- feine containing plants. What is Caffeine? Caffeine is one of a group of alkaloids called methylxanthine which oc- cur naturally in about 63 species of plants. A drug with mild stimulant effect, it is considered to be one of the world's most widely used drugs. The most familiar and widely used sources of caffeine are cof- fee and cocoa beans. Caf- feine is also used in many "'over the counter" drug Preparations. - 14' x 70' 3 bedrodm house trailer with an extended living room. Ful- ly furnished, owner, moving to senior citizens home. Caffeine is rapidly ab- sorbed from the gastro- intestinal tract and reaches peak levels in the blood within 15-45 minutes. Following absorption caf- feine reapidly enters all organs and tissues in the body in proportion to the water content. of the tissues. Effieient elimina- tion of caffeine from the body by the kidney depends upon its conver- sion by the liver into forms that are more readily ex- creted in the urine. The rate of caffeine elimination can vary with individuals according to their age, sex, hormonal status, stage of pregnancy, medication be- ing taken, smoking habit, health of liver and race. Caffeine freely crosses the placenta to the fetus and is absorbed into breast milk. Caffeine can also ac- cumulate in the newborn because the enzymes to promote elimination are not yet present. . There is no conclusive evidence that moderate amounts of caffeine are harmful to the average healthy adult. However, for some people a dependency effect can be created by as little as 200 Ing of caffeine. To test if you are getting more caffeine than you should, remove all sources from the diet for one day. If a throbbing headache oc- curs one day later and can only be relieved by more caffeine, then chances are you are suffering from caf- feine withdrawal! Corns?
