Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, May 8, 1985, page 11 Godly Politics? by Keith Milne Terrace Bay Gospel Assembly The shock waves of the recent election are still crashing around us. The election is over but the ef- fects are just beginning because whether we like it or not, politics effects everyone. Some people thrive on the excitement - the thrill of victory but also realizing the risk of defeat. Others try to ignore politics or politicians, while others "hate it with a passion."' Yet, it seems that everyone can become quite animated when politics is the subject of discussion. When you mix religion with politics often there is a volcanic eruption. Yet, if we take our religious beliefs seriously - we need to somehow - correlate our political and religious beliefs. My question - is it possible to have a spiritual perspective of politics? Political involvement is motivated by one of two general characteristics and they are extreme opposites. The positive characteristic that we are generally ex- posed to in Canadian politics is the motivation of becoming involved because the individual or groups believes that their contribu- tion will be beneficial to all people. The negative characteristic that we must guard against are the in- dividuals or groups that are serving their own self- centered interests. Sometimes the experience of political power causes people to lose the proper perspective and they begin to serve themselves rather than the majority of people. People with a perverted perspective think that political power or authori- ty is the ultimate therefore if they are in control then they are the highest authority. This is complete- ly contrary to the teachings of the Scripture because it teaches that God is the ultimate authority. This must be a perspective that we must maintain. Tour comes to Terrace Bay Gabriel, a touring group from the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute, will be coming to Terrace Bay for a program on Wednesday the 15 of May at 7:30 p.m. in the Terrace Bay.. Public. School. The. - team is made up of seven young people from the Bi- ble School, they will be touring during the months of May and June, primari- ly in the province of On- tario, sharing the word of God in music, word and drama. The group chose the name Gabriel because just as the angel Gabriel was a messenger of good news and- comfort; announcing the coming of the Saviour, they too wish to be messengers of the Gospel, proclaiming the death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Students meet poet On Thurs. April 18, students from Terrace Bay P.S. and St. Martin's went to the public library to meet Sean O'Huigin a Canadian poet who writes for children. The pupils were as delighted with Mr. O'Huigin as they were with his poetry and théy are pleased to report on the Visit. When Sean O'Huigin read his poems he made all the children laugh. I thought he was a very talented man. He even taught. I had a lot of fun. It happened because the Library booked him. He started to write children's books in 1978. So far he has 14 books out. Reporter: Boe Tychoniak, Grade 2, T.B.P.S. This is a report on a famous poet. His name is Sean O'Huigin. We went to the Library on Thurs., April 18, 1985. At the library he read us poems that he wrote. He also taught us how to do lots of things like make pop-outs and words without using letters and paper airplanes with poems on them. P.S. It was totally exciting! = Reporter: Crystal Lux- more, Grade 2, T.B.P.S. He is the ultimate authority and political leaders have a responsibility before God as well as to the people they serve. God can and will put people into posi- tions of authority but He is also able to cause them to be displaced. This is not to give the idea that God sits in heaven playing political games. He does not favour one party or system over another. God is interested in people. Throughout Scripture God is revealed as seeking leaders who will be humble and recognize that they are not the highest authority: Although, the previous thought is a simplified statement of theology, it does help us to gain a spiritual perspective. . Action is always re-: quired from theological thought. That is why Chris- tians are instructed to pray for the people who have the responsibility to govern the affairs of the nation. Civic, provincial, federal and any other level of represen- tatives need to be prayed for. I believe that prayer is the best support that we can offer the leaders of our communities, because it shows that we have a pro- per perspective. Pray that these people will have in- sight to understand their place of authority. We should pray that God will bless them with wisdom and the humbleness to look for God's wisdom. Sometimes - due to our personal likes and dislikes - some politicians are easier to pray for than others but Christians must remember to pray for all. We should be grateful for the quality people who are willing to give of themselves to become in- volved in the various levels of government on our behalf. May God bless them as we remember to care and pray.
