Page 12, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, April 24, 1985 says Grossman 'NDP economic policies mean higher taxes' Speaking at a P.C. rally held in Manitouwadge last week, Ontario's Treasurer Larry Grossman stated the New Democratic Party's proposed economic policies for Ontario can on- ly result in higher taxes for the public. Using the NDP's economic policy book for the May 2nd elec- tion as the source of his in- formation, Mr. Grossman illustrated how their pro- posals can only result in higher personal or retail sales taxes for all Ontarioans. "The NDP proposes eliminating OHIP premiums." To recover this estimated $300 million loss in provincial revenue would mean increasing personal income tax by at least 25 per cent or raising the retail sales tax to around 10 per cent. A third alternative to recovery would be a:new employee payroll tax. The Ontario Progressive Conservatives totally reject these ideas. _'"Combining this $300 million loss with the P.C.'s proposed $325 million tax savings to small businesses under Enterprise Ontario creates a $600 million plus difference in the two Darties."' Bay and Marathon Our Customers! Know.. Shouldn't You? "The NDP also propose phasing the education tax out of property taxes." This .would mean an estimated two billion dollar loss in revenue. Speculating on how the NDP would replace this deficit, Mr. Grossman in- dicated it could mean a fur- ther increase in personal and retail sales taxes. Com- bined with the above tax recovery for OHIP premiums this would mean up to a'50 per cent increase in income taxes and a 13 per cent sales tax. Concluding his remarks Grossman -found it in- teresting that the NDP would enact legislation in areas already enacted by previous Ontario P.C. governments. Some ex- amples included a shop On- tario program (done - 1978), employee purchas- ing of failing businesses. (done - 1980), independent purchasing from small businesses (done - 1980), and a work futures training trust fund (done - 1984). "The issue for the voters in the Lake Nipigon Riding on May 2nd is not whether or not Jack Stokes was a good representative. That Is now in the past. The Issue is which candidate and which party can best develop and ensure your future. Jim Files and the Progressive Conservative government of Ontario have that ability. The deci- sion made by voters could have impact on this riding for as much as 30 years in- to the future. May 2nd is the chance to move from criticism and complaint to active participation in government."'
