Anchor Bill LeGrand On a bathroom wall in a restaurant, I read this in- scription: "'Be a man, join the clan" (i.e. the infamous KKK). During a conversa- tion with people in Lon- don, one of them told Paki (i.e. Pakistani Canadian) jokes and turned red when we didn't laugh. We don't need to travel to South Africa' to. experience racism. Apartheid does flourish in various parts of Canada, where Jews or Blacks, or Orientals are barred from membership, usually by means of com-- mittees. Within Northern Ontario, this racism can surface in the form of Tokenism ... "Fred is a good Indian. He isn't like the others and doesn't roll down the highway drunk."' Racism of whatever sort is a serious sin. It not only betrays the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but it hurts various groups who are different by faith, tradition, color, language, sex gender and/or appearance. Jesus said, "....as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' (Matt. 25:40) If we practice racism against any of our brothers or sisters, we are opposing the teachings of Jesus and the will of God, the Father. The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37) is very mucha story to counter racism in Jesus' day. Few groups were as hated by the Jews as Samaritans -- people who were considered heretical in their teachings, unclean in their rituals, and sinners in the eyes of God for not following his laws. Yet, it was the Samaritan who rescued the -- injured traveller and saved his life. This parable, like many of Jesus' teachings, is a call for tolerance and justice. Racism hit it's zenion during World War II with the vicious barbarism that spread through the Nazi Racial Laws "The Final Solution'? which caused millions of innocent Jews and other "subhumans" to be deprived of their human dignity and gassed to death, was a nightmare of the most Satanic sort. However, we miss the point if we single out Ger- mans as the murderers -- the worst atrocities im- aginable were committed by people following orders from all different na- Notes by MARY HUBELIT So you think your feet are cold in this blustery spring weather? How about this clipping from an old newspaper: "Ellensberg, Wash.' A Cocker spaniel with cold feet held up a Milwaukee freight train Saturday. The train pulled to an unscheduled stop after the dog failed to move from the track. Engine men found the dog's four wet paws frozen to the icy rail. They freed him and the train went on."' Perhapos this cold- blooded item will electrify you: '*Two 'condemned murderers saw themselves on television recently and a few hours later died in the electric chair for the $18.00 holdup killing of a BIRTH Paul and Michelle are pleased to announce the arrival of their first child, - Kyle. Most frighten- ing was the silence coming from many Christian chur- ches in various parts of the world. Within Canada and the United States, we for- cibly removed thousands of our Japanese citizens, "'for their own protection", seizing their homes and businesses and caging whole families in work camps. : And, racism is far from dead. In Alberta, a high school teacher presented anti-Semitism as part of his "World History" pro- gram, for years, before he was removed. In Toronto, the frequency of attacks upon Pakistani-Canadians is on. the rise.' The notorious KKK proudly claims to have chapters in most regions of Canada. Racism knows no na- tionality or group. When Israeli soldiers allowed hundreds of Palistinian refugees to be butchered by a fanatical Christian Army in Lebanon two years ago, the officers responded that they were "following orders' ... not unlike some S.S. officers at the Nuremberg' Trials, who said the same thing about Jews being killed during their service at Aushwitz, Dachau, or Treblinka. The list is endless. As Christians, we cannot prac- tice our faith and love the Gospel without opposing racism in all of its forms, both subtle and blatant. To follow Jesus, we must con- demn and oppose racism, which is one of the deadliest diseases which 'can destroy any people. When hatred exists, God's will is not followed. from the past cab driver. It happened in Chicago. The doomed men, Alfonso Najera, 27, and Fred Varela, 26, were filmed in death row and the film put on a 7 p.m. newsreel show later the same day. The two murderers watched themselves on a television set loaned them. by the warden."' Well, here's another old (1958) clipping that is guaranteed to warm you through and through: "Dublin: the government has bowed to the fairies. Lands Minister Erskine Childers decided Wednes- day night to "bend'"' a fence so it skirts a plot of land in County Mayo believed to be occupied by the "little people', reliable sources said. A crisis erupted when 20 government employees defied dismissal threats in refusing to follow the original plan for a fence smack through Leprechaun-tenanted ground in the hamlet of Belmullet. The government was unable to find other workers daring enough to risk fairy ire by construc- ting the fence. The frightened workmen said the "good people" might take offence and do things to them they might "not be able to unders- tand"' if the fence was put through the "fairy palace"' as planned."' I'll lay more of these gems on you another time. Children Helping Children Missionary work for children, founded in France in 1843, is still very much alive at St. Martin School. Last fall the grade 1 and 2 class pledged their support for the Holy Childhood. This is a child- centered organization pro- moted by, Pope John Paul to help improve life for children in the Third World. All students at the school have generously supported the activities of these little people. Christmas seals weye sold, on Valentine's Day (Love Cup Day) money normally spent on junk food was donated and old library books sold. During Lent the students themselves have been sav- ing pennies to make a donation of $189.02 before Easter. Small efforts of these lit- tle children will continue throughout the rest of the school year. They are con- cerned about the 50 million children in our world who suffer daily on a daily basis in many ways.
