Page 12, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 13, 1985 Anchor An unusual mass By BILL LEGRAND In my early years of Struggle in Raith, I attend- ed a Mass in Campbellton, New Brunswick. There, I experienced a sermon delivered by a humble priest, which transformed my spiritual life. It was the Saturday before Parrion Week and the preacher was discussing the depths of Jesus' humanity. Matthew 26: 36-46 was his text and it concerned our Lord's time in Gethsemane. "'Imagine Jesus at Gesthsemane,"" the priest said, "a man who knew who he was - the son of 'God. Alone, abandoned and uncertain of what was to happen to him, Jesus was very human. Although He realized physical death and extraordinary pain which was inevitable, this didn't crush Him as deep- . ly. as the knowledge of the world's rejection. All that He had preached, all that He had accomplished was about to be discarded. Even His own disciples did not completely understand His remorse. He was alone and loneliness was crushing Him. It's little wonder He was reluctant to face the wrath of the world. Any person would, and Jesus was very human at this point. Yet within the depths of His humanity was an unparalleled courage and faith. to carry on, at any price. This lonely man, pressed on by heavy ten- Kids and continued from page 11 etc. before they reach their teachers. Many of these students have a computer at home, . where they can spend time experimenting, and pro- bably helping the adults catch on to the workings of this new machine. With this early introduction to the computer age, the students of this area should sion was human to His very emince."' Since that time I recognized that Jesus was truly human. This humani- ty of our Lord can never be ignored whenever we con- sider the Jesus Christ of history and of the present. To know Jesus is to trust -His humanity as well as His divinity. This can and does allow us to know Jesus as a living person and not a theological concept. In fact abstract theology on Christology breaks down when it comes to Jesus' presence in our lives. Even after Jesus' resur- rection He appears to witness as a human person (Luke 24: 13-53). This, I have always felt, pointed to Jesus' compassion and understanding of our human natures. In mainline churches there's an attempt to avoid the personal aspects of Jesus in our lives. This ap- pears most often with hymns and Christian im- ages. Yet, I suspect many folks realize what many: theologians don't ex- perience - that music is prayer.
