By law the rules that apply to operating a motor vehicle on the road are the same as those that apply to operating a snowmobile, and for that matter, any off-road vehicle. In Ontario, an individual is chargeable under the Criminal Code of Canada if he/she is over the .08 per cent blood alcohol level if he/she is driving a motor vehicle - on or off the highway. At levels of .05 per cent, which can be reached by three drinks within an hour on an emp- ty stomach (for someone 150 lbs. or less), a person's ability is significantly im- paired. In such a condition a person: can easily make rash decisions involving considerable risk taking. The effect of alcohol on body temperature is also very significant and ought to be considered in any winter outdoors activity. Drinking alcohol will in- itially make the body feel warm as there is an in- crease in blood flow to the skin surface as well as to the gastro-intestinal areas of the body. The skin begins to flush and will perspire and radiate heat - resulting in a drop in body temperature. As the con- sumption of alcohol in- creases, the temperature- regulating mechanisms in the central nervous system become depressed, resulting in even lower body temperatures. The use of alcohol while snowmobiling in cold weather puts one at real risk - because of impaired judgement and reduced ability and because of the loss of body heat. The slogan "Don't Drink and Drive" applies to snowmobilers as well as those operating a highway vehicle! :
