More Pee Wee action. Snowmobiling and alcohol Many Northerners have a love affair with the snowmobile. As_ with operating cars, some peo- ple combine alcohol with their snowmobiling. The results of this combination can be tragically injurious and even fatal - and accor- ding to some studies the frequency of these results is on the increase. Studies by people from the Traffic Injury Research Foundation of Canada in- dicate that, of fatalities amongst operators of dif- ferent vehicle types, snowmobile operators were more likely to have had blood alcohol levels above .08 per cent (the statutory limit). That is the greatest frequency of blood alcohol levels over .08 per cent was found among fatally injured snowmobile drivers (42 per cent). Figures from _ the Ministry of Transportation and Communication in- dicate that during our last winter season, provincial snowmobile fatalities rose by more than 100 per cent. In 1982-83 there were 11 snowmobile fatalities in Ontario whereas in 1983-84 there were twenty- four. Non-fatal snowmobile accidents rose from 316 in 1982-83 to 468 during 1983-84 - an in- crease of 48 per cent in one year. In last year's 24 fatalities, 15 drivers had been drinking, ie. their ability was impaired by alcohol. Besides these figures, six snowmobilers died because of drowning. All six had alcohol in their blood! One doctor (Robert Niven, M.D.) says that when snowmobile operators are admitted to emergency wards "with bad facial lacerations, or concussions, or occasional- ly end up in the morgue because they were decapitated, I would make a lot of money betting you their . accidents were alcohol-related.
