You will recall that this expand- ed area was requested by the Lake Superior Board to broaden its tax base and to include areas such as Hemlo and Winston Lake. This also had the effect of including all residents within the prescribed boun- daries outside of organized municipalities, that is unorganized territory. It in- cludes permanent residences, summer cot- tages and remote hunting camps on or near lakes within the new jurisdiction. Many of those affected too advantage of the oppor- tunity to present themselves at an open house held by your Ministry officials yesterday and today, January 30th and 31st in Schreiber. This new assessment notice has been not well received by those owning remote hunting and fishing camps where the value is much less than a permanent residence or a summer cot- tage. The difference being the land upon which these. remote buildings are located still belongs to the Crown and is leased to-the camp -owner under a land use permit. This is quite different from the situation where the cottage owners and permanent residents own their own land. In addition, a question has arisen where if you are a separate school supporter owning such a camp you may not be subject to the additional taxes and assess- ment but a public school supporter obviously is liable for the tax. My question to you is are you able to or prepared to differentiate between a residential dwelling oc- cupied twelve months of the year and a summer cot- tage that is occupied for two-to-three months of the year and a hunting-fishing camp where it could be oc- cupied for as little as 10-15 days a year. Will there be a dif- ference between separate school and public school supporters occupying these different classes of dwell- ings mentioned? Any assistance you can provide by way of an ex- planation will be most welcome and_ greatly appreciated. Yours sincerely, Jack Stokes, M.P.P.
