PAGE 12 TERRACE BAY NEWS _ NOVEMBER 16, 1977 CURLING COMMENTS: Cont'd from pg. 11 .... Thursday, November 10th, was "Tumbleweed" night. Although this type of pre-season prac- tice was introduced just last year it may be- come a popular annual event. Thirty-two ladies entered the minispiel and other members watched the fun as new curlers took their turns as' skips. First prize went to Rhea Beaulieu-skip Pat Fenton, Cheryl DeJonghe and Christine Kjerulf; the runners-up were Ida Romanuk-skip, Sheelagh Hamilton, Rita Moore and Susan Hay. Congratulations to Marianne McDougal for a well-organized and enjoyable evening. The teams are now picked and ladies begin regular curling on Tuesday, 15th November. Eleven teams curl on Tuesdays and six on Thurs- days. Four trophies are awarded at the end of the season and this year the winner of the: Club Championship round will get a second tro- phy because twelve teams are needed for the divisional type of play. . The opening event, a two-end minispiel, was held on Saturday, 12th November. (My apologies for incorrect date last week). -Fourteen teams entered this mixed event and LLoyd Dejonghe's team placed first. Second place went to B. Wilkinson's team and third to J. Commisso's team. Tom Hay won the raffle and G. Puttock the door prize. Reserve Saturday, 10th December for the Christmas Party. Watch for more details next week. GUIDING NEWS: On All Saints day, Tuesday, November lst, 1977, the Terrace Bay Community Church was the setting for a very historical and -~memorable occasion. A Memorial Service was held for Olave Lady Baden Powell, the world Chief Guide since 1930, who died on June 25th at the age of 85 years in Surrey, England. She was predeceased by her husband Lord Robert Baden Powell 'in 1941. Rangers, Guides, Brownies, Scouts and Cubs along with their leaders and many interested members of the public paid respect to this won- derful person who gave over 50 years of her 1ife to Guiding and Scouting. Colours were presented by: Girl Guides and Rangers - Patty Stachiw and Kim Korzinski; Scouts - Fred Speer; Brownies Pack #1 - Tracey Clarke and Tanya Evoy; Pack #2 - Pam Menchenton and Briggetta Samp; Cubs - Mark London. Brown Owl Barbara Wise received them. Mrs. Shirley Mikus, a past Guider and Com- missioner read a prayer and a reading. Charles Wise, Bill Zroback, Doug Zroback, Tracey Sta- chiw and Shelley Velanoff assisted in the ser-= vice. Guider Pam Jones led the singing with Aini Anderson at the piano. Ranger, Marigold Bish- op accompanied the Rangers and Guides at the piano for the singing of "The World Song". . Blue carnations and yellow shasta daisies were placed on the altars of the Community : Church and St. Martin's Church in Remembrance of Lady Baden Powell by the Guides and Brow- nies of Terrace Bay. & At the close of the service 'Taps' were [ sung followed by 'Taps' on the trumpet by iy Charles Wise. As the last lingering notes Z echoed through the church, everyone thought - lovingly of this great person of whom they had just paid tribute to, and each one, young and - old alike remembered Olave Lady Baden Powells' last message in which she indicated that there be no mourhing as such, but that every- one rejoice and have happy memories of her and delight at her having completed her life fully, and that all her prayers have been answered. God gave her work till the end of her life, God gave her life till her work was } done and now he has given us all the courage 2 and strength to carry on her work for her, for the good of the young people throughout the world. ea PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS. < YOU CAN HELP BY MAKING THEIR WORLD AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE.
