Pe PAGE 14 TERRACE BAY NEWS AUGUST 31, 1977 THE FOLLOWING IS A LETTER SUBMITTED TO THE TERRACE BAY NES BY JACK STOKES, MPP LAKE NIPIGON: The Honourable Alastair Gillespie Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario Dear Mr. Minister I am sure you are aware that the escalating costs of gasoline and fuel oil are having a profound effect on the economy of northwestern Ontario. These costs are aggravating the ability of industrial consumers to compete in world markets. The high costs of_ gasoline and fuel oil also have a devastating effect on commercial 'and residential consumers particul- carly those who are dependent upon fuel oil for heating purposes in our harsh winter cli- mate, those who of necessity must drive their 'large urban centres for essential services and those who are forced to drive as much as 50 "miles to and from work. The price differential in a gallon of gasoline from one area to another has never been explain -ed, certainly 'not to our satisfaction. Gaso- line can be purchased in the City of Thunder Bay for 87 cents per gallon while that same product costs the consumer $1.04 one hundred .and thirty miles east of Thunder Bay for a Z price differential of 17 cents. C.P. Rail hauls that gasoline by tank car for less than 2 cents per gallon. The same price prevails at Marathon, Ontario; namely, $1.04 per' gallon even though the bulk of their gas- oline requirements are brought in by ship.
