MARCH 2, I977 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 3 Marge Hamilton reported on behalf of the Police Department that she and Police Chief Zroback attended a meeting in Atikokan. Mrs. Hamilton had a tentative copy of the budget for the Police Department. Councillor Hamilton had an estimated cost for a new building for the Police Department. A shell 24' x 27' (648 sg. ft.) would cost approximately $27,963. She felt that the building could be renovated for under $I0,000. The Town Council decided to put the estim~ ated cost for the renovation of the Police . Department up for tender to see what would result. The review of the Police Department budget was tabled for further discussion at a special meeting. Councillor George Ramsay reported to Coun- cil on the problems of the Recreation Depart- ment. On their behalf he put forth a request for the purchase of a Coin Sorter and Counter to be used for the vending machines ($I1000.). Council was not in favour of such a purchase before the budget was decided. A face-lift of $70,000.00 over two years will be considered for the Recreation Build- ing. : The total expenditure on improved roads for 1976 - $25,437.95 will be submitted to the government for subsidization in the amount of 50%. THIS IS AN APPEAL--BUT NOT FOR MONEY! In recognition of the health hazard of smoking, all Canadian physicians have been sent a letter by the Minister of National Health and Welfare and the President of the Canadian Medical Association. The letter reads: "Dear Doctor, This letter is an appeal -- but not for mon- ey: It is an appeal for your help in reduc- ing a serious health hazard. This is a re- quest for a personal and professional commit- ment to help your non-smoking patients to enjoy smoke-free air. We ask that: If you smoke, you refrain from smoking during the conduct of your pro- fessional duties. You remember the importance of your personal smoking habits and behaviour as an example. You encourage colleagues, employees and patients to refrain from smok- -smoking prescription (card) and displaying it prominently in your offices. It is now 21 years since the Canadian Med- ical Association first issued a public warn- ing on the hazards of smoking. For several years, Health and Welfare Canada has been making Canadians aware of the health risks associated with smoking. The health hazards of smokers have been documented beyond dispute; however, an appre- ciation of the health hazards to non-smokers exposed to cigarette smoking is more recent. Physicians especially cannot ignore the lar- ge numbers of patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema who suffer acute respiratory, psychogenic, and other distress when exposed to smoke. 2 We believe your patients' need for, and right to, smoke-free air while availing - themselves of your professional services should be respected. On their behalf, we urge that you respect that right. In addit- ion to its benefits to the non-smoking pat- ient, a non-smoking environment helps those trying to quit or cut down and encourages young people not to smoke. ; Please sign and exhibit the prescription and remember the importance of your example!
