ANDREW'S CELEBRATE DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY On October 26th the congregation of St. An- drew's United Church in Schreiber celebrated a double anniversary = the 90th year of the founding of their local church and the 50th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. The actual date was June 10, 1925 when the u- nion betweeh Methodists, some Presbyterians and other smaller groups took place in Toronto. The religious history of Schreiber began earlier than the founding of Schreiber on 1885 when missionaries of many denominations visit=- ed the village and held services. The first representative of the Presbyterian Church was Rev. John Pringle of St. Paul's Church in Port Arthur, followed by the first resident minis- ter, Mr. Hay in 1886. During the next few yedrs theological students supplied the field in Schreiber. During the ministry of Mr. N. Merkley the first Church was built and opened in 1887 and two years later Mr. W. Neilly became the first permanent and resident pastor. In his time the Ladies' Aid Society with a membership of 12 was formed, and greatly assisted the Church by financial means. In the summer of 1905, the original manse was built for the benefit of Rev. Wm. Waugh and successive ministers. The Women's Miss- ionary Society was organized in 1912 with Mrs. Moodie as president. In 1921 during the Ministry of Rev. Justice local union was achieved between the Presbyte- rian Church and Methodist congregations and the Presbyterian Church was enlarged and ren- ovated. Succeeding Mr. Justice was Rev. Wm. Reid in whose term the CGIT and Tuxis programs for girls and boys of the congregation were introduced. Rev. Wm. Holmes began his minist- ry in 1925 and during his time many improve- ments were made to the church and property. Junior and Senior Choirs were formed and the Sunday School enrolment grew to 140 child=- ren with 14 teachers. Mrs. Robert Small was the Superintendant for many years. During the intervening years many changes have taken place, renovations being made in the Church building and a new manse was built. The Women's Association (former Ladies' Aid), the Evening Auxiliary (organized in 1246) and the Women's Missionary Society merged to form one group, under a new name, United Church Wo- men in Jan. 1962. First president of this group was Mrs. R. Macadam with Mrs. W. Clemens 4s Secretary.
