AUGUST 27, 1975 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE II «HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY HOLDS 2IST ANNUAL SHOW On Saturday, August 23rd, the rain held off long enough to allow I4 Junior Gardeners and II adults to bring some of the fruits of their summer labours to the arena for the 2Ist Annual Horticultural Seciety Show. Mr. Walter Chomniak travelled from Thunder Bay to do the judging. The Junior Gardeners programme, chaired by Rudy Gerlach, consists of a Garden Competition as well"as participation in the Annual Show. Members are given seeds by the Horticultural Society to plant in their gardens: These gard- ens are judged three times during the summer and points are accumulated to determine the winners. This year the winner in the Junior Section was Sabina Buhrmann and in the Senior section, er brother Oswald. Mr. Peter Romanuk present- ed the prizes on behalf of the United Paper- workers International Union, Terrace Bay, Loc- al 665. ; Second prizes were sponsored by the Terrace Bay Community Credit Union and were presented by Mr. Ab Farrow to Nancy Gerlach in. the Junior Section and to Donna Lapenskie in the Senior Section. } Third prizes, sponsored by the Horticultural Society were awarded to Wendy Mendelin in the Junior Section and to Paul Gerlach and Corrine Cotton who were tied in the Senior Section. At the show Sylvia Landry won the Horticul- tural Society sheild for accumulating the high- est number of points. The Loyal Order of Moose, Terrace Bay Lodge No. I752 award for the highest number of points accumulated by a girl was presented by Mr. Frank Roen to Sylvia Landry and by a boy to denis Landry. The Imperial Bank of Commerce award for the outstanding exhibit was presented by Mr. Dick Buckley to Sylvia Landry for her Collection of Wild Flowers pressed and mounted. In addition to Denis and Sylvia Landry some fine looking produce was entered by Rhonda Miller, Sabina Buhrmann, Gordie Miller, Nancy Gerlach, Karen Anderson, Wendy Mendelin, Warr- en Northcott, Tanice Marcella, Greg Kostiuk, Oswald Buhrmann, Andy Kostiuk and Paul Gerla- ch. . : , A new competition this year, sponsored by the Horticultural Society, was the Award for Effort. In the competition the members were to grow any plant of their choice from their own source. These were judged at the same times as the gardens. The winner was Karen Anderson for her grapefruit tree. : In the adult section of the show Hyacinthe Landry successfully defended his championship and once again took home the Township of Terrace Bay trophy. Irene Steen was runner- up. : Section winners were: Irene Steen for Hou- seplants, Ab Farrow for Annuals, Sheila Mon- tey for Biennials, Hyacinthe Landry for Per- ennials, Dahlias and Glads, Displays and Flor- al Arrangements, Ab Farrow for Roses and Out- door Potted Plants, Collections, Eva Connors for Fruit and Irene Steen for Vegetables. The Door Prize of a hose and sprinkler, don -ated by Hudson's Bay Co. was won by Frank Anderson. Several minor docr prizes of pam phlets on the growing of trees and shrubs were also awarded but your reporter forgot to get the names of the winners.
