JUNE 18, I975 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE"S9 SUBDIVISION PLANNED FOR NAKINA Kimberly-Clark of Canada Limited has begun work on an 82-lot subdivision in Nakina to help provide housing accommodation for the 250 0 275 permanent employees who will be added o the work force of the Nakina area by a maj- vr expansion of the company's woodlands oper- ations. The woodlands expansion is part of a $240- million development program currently being undertaken by Kimberly-Clark. The program in- cludes enlargement of the company's bleached softwood kraft pulp mill at Terrace Bay. When completed in late I977, pulp production will increase from 435 tons to I,250 tons per day. The new subdivision will be built on a 44- acre site fronting on Rounds Lake and is part of a broader plan of development by the munic- ipality. Grant Puttock, president of Kimberly-Clark of Canada and general manager of the company's pulp and forest products division, told a pup- lic meeting in Nakina that the company plans to build II houses this year as well as service the remaining lots of the subdivision. The new housing units will be rented to Kim-| berly-Clark employees, with a later option to purchase. Additional units will be built in 1976 and "1977. The meeting, held in the gymnasium of the R.R. Steele Community School in Nakina, was in- itiated by Kimberly-Clark to review plans for its development project. Purpose of the meeting was to discuss the effects the expansion program will have on the residents of the Nakina area. To help evalu- ate the impact of the development on the area, Kimberly-Clark retained the services of a Tor- onto-based firm of environmental consultants. The report outlines the woodlands and mill the region's wildlife, employment, popula- tion, housing, air and water quality, etc. The mill expansion at Terrace Bay and supp- orting woodlands in Longlac, Geraldton and Nakina areas represents the largest single capital project in Kimberly-Clark's history. To meet all its wood requirements, Kimber- ly-Clark will harvest an estimated 973,000 cords annually. Additional timber limits have been granted to the company under Crown licence to provide a combined area of I2,I86 square miles .of forest. Mr. Puttock noted that the biggest impact will be felt in Terrace Bay because of the in -creased mill capacity and in Nakina, which will become the main base for cutting in the company's new timber leases in the north. The 250-275 new employees in the Nakina area will be engaged in road building and wood cutting in the new timber limits and in operating a new slasher and garage complex planned for the area.
