TERRAGE BAY NEWS | Vol. I7 No. 24 June I9, I974 20¢ Per Copy CNIB VISITS TERRACE BAY Terrace Bay is one of 24 northern Ontario communities to be visited this year by the CNIB Mobile Eye Care Unit. This prevention of blindness program of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind pro- vides the services of an eye specialist in areas where none are presently available. On June I3 and I4, 52 local residents were given eye examinations by ophthalmologist, Dr. R.D. Merritt. The doctor volunteered a week from his office practice in Niagara Falls to work in Terrace Bay. Two permanent CNIB staff members assisted him. The Mobile Eye Care Unit is an ophthalmolo- gist's office: fully equipped to diagnose eye disease, prescribe glasses and perform minor surgical procedures. Those patients with ocu- lar problems are referred to the nearest spec- ialist for treatment and continuing care. This is the third year the unit has made a tour of the north, says Operations Manager, Miss Pat Trusty. "Service has been provided to 58 communit- ies, and over 6000 eye examinations performed. A wide variety of ocular problems and diseases have been discovered." Early detection and proper follow-up of su- ch conditions as glaucoma and amblyopia can prevent needless loss of sight, says Miss Trusty. Preliminary arrangements and sponsorship for the unit's visit were made by the Terrace Bay Kinsmen Club. ='PhOtOS PAGE 5 vou eess Pet Population America's pet population in- cludes 2 million cats, 26 million caged biirds, 32.6 million dogs, and 500 million tropical fish.
