Vol. I7 No. 23 June I2, I974 20¢ Per Copy BIRCHWOOD TERRACE OFFICIALLY OPENED The aircraft touched down and landed smooth- ly on the new airstrip at Terrace Bay, carrying the Minister and his party from Toronto to attend the official opening of Birchwood Terr- ace, the new senior citizens home. It was Fri- day, May 3Ist, and the weatherman had decided to co-operate with mogtly sunny weather and temperatures in the mid sixties. The official party included the Minister, the Honourable Rene Brunelle, Lawrence Crawford Executive Director, Programme Delivery, North- western Ontario area, Mr. M. Graver, District Director of Community and Social Services, Mr. H. Sohn, Director and Mrs. Dorothy Plesner, Programme Development for Senior Citizens of On tario. Mr. McClure, Federal Representative for Canada Assistance Place for Ontario had arrived earlier. Mr. D. Rafalant, Administrator of Birchwood Terrace and Mrs. Wendy Kirkpatrick, Supervisor of Services, conducted the party on a tour of the Home and its facilities. They looked in on residents' rooms newly decorated in pastel shades and gaily coloured and patter- ned wallpapers. Under the able direction of Mrs. Rena McAdam President of the McCausland Hospital Board of Governors, the party inspected the hospital and were then toured through the Recreational Com- Plex by Gerry Dupas, Director of Recreation for Terrace Bay. Dinner was enjoyed by the official party a- long with residents and staff of Pinewood Court, Thunder Bay, who arrived by chartered bus. II2 students from Grades 4 to 8 have qual- ified for the Canada Fitness Award. This award is based on the six performance tests of The Canadian Association for Health, Phys- ical Education and Recreation. Crests are awarded on the basis of the lev- el of achievement. Performance levels by age and sex have been developed. The level a par- ticipant reaches in each of the tests deter- mines the award won. Approximately 95% of the students competing for this award were successful. Word has been received that Dr. Jack Shau- ghnessy of Teeswater, Ontario passed away in May. Dr. Shaughnessy will be remembered by early Terrace Bay residents as the first den- tist here. Sympathy is expressed to the family.
