SMITH Grandma Addie Smith, who has made her home with her daughter Norah - Mrs. D'Arcy McGuire for the past three years, had a birthday, and her many young friends came a'calling with congratulations and gifts. When someone politely inquired which birth- day this one was, Addie with her usual roguish smile, replies 'Let me put it this way - I am old enough to legally vote and drink!' Grandma, who spent 50 years of her married life in Richard's Landing, St. Joseph's Island 'lives most happily in Schreiber, and in a unique household where she has two sets of twin granddaughters, identical twins, to furth- er complicate daily life, and three other granddaughters. Against such a plethora of feminine wiles a father and lone grandson were forced to connive with Grandma Addie to retain some vestige of power. Grandma is an omnivorous reader but her fingers still retain their agility in needle- work. And her fabulous memory a delight to visit=- ors, when her sense of humour conjures up com- parisons of life today and with those of the depression years. Although confined to the house, 'Addie', because of her wide range in reading, or, the younger generation with whom she's so closely connected, maintains a tolerant view of life today. During the evening Connie and Cecile, the younger twins, sang several songs honouring their grandmother and all the granddaughters assisted their mother in serving lunch.
