STOKES QUESTIONS GASOLINE PRICING ; The following is a letter by Jack Stokes, MPP, Thunder Bay, written to The Hon. John Clement, Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations. "Dear Mr. Minister, I read with interest your expressed intention to monitor price increases in the cost of con- sumer items. The price of many of these items is depen- dent on supply and demand, floods, hurricanes, draught and transportation charges. However, when one examines the cost of gasoline through out the province, it is impossible to compre- hend the pricing practices of these huge multi- national companies. This week the cost of No. 2 gasoline in the city of Thunder Bay was 53¢; at Pass Lake, 24 miles east, it was 5I¢; at Nipigon, 70 miles east of Thunder Bay, it was 6I¢; at Gurney, 95 miles east of Thunder Bay, it was 60¢; whi- le at Schreiber, I27 miles east, it was 64¢. This means that there is an II¢ difference be- tween Pass Lake and Schreiber. I am advised that the cost of Crane oriatio: is less than I¢ per gallon and yet we are for- ced to live with these wide disparities in gas -oline prices. There is no shortage of oil in Canada and yet government sits wringing its hands while these large companies continue to rip off and gouge the consumer. I urge you to set up a Commission of Inquiry to look into the pricing of gasoline in north- western Ontario so that oil companies will be forced to justify a I3¢ price spread over a distance of I00 miles. Your interest and concern will be apprecia- ted. Yours Sincerely, Jack Stokes, MPP. Thunder Bay. Aurel J. Gauthier, Schreiber's assistant town clerk, has just successfully completed a course in Municipal Administration taken from Queen's University.
