OPEN 8 A.M. TO 12 MIDNIGHT The Era to 2,000 A.D. (NEWS OF EARTH, ENVIRONMENT, ENERGY) fp The Environmental Protection Agency released air quality data indicating that nitrogen dioxide (NO,) does not represent a wide- spread air pollution problem now, but that a National Ambient Air Quality Standard is still needed to protect the public health. Based on this data, the EPA suggested that the mandatory 90 percent reduction in auto emis- sions of nitrogen oxides by 1976, as required by the Clean Air Act, Dr. Lydia Answer to today's MINIQUIZ is not required to meet the Na- tional Ambient Air Quality Stand- ard for nitrogen oxides. Nitrogen dioxide results largely from chemical changes that take place after nitrogen oxides are emitted into the air. The new data was derived from measurements made during 1972 at some 200 sites across the na- tion. They indicated that only two air quality control regions - Los Angeles and Chicago - definitely have nitrogen dioxide levels ex- ceeding the health-related stand- ards. Originally 47 air quality control regions were in this cate- gory. The EPA said it anticipates pro- posing about March 1974 the for- mal selection of a new "reference method" for measuring nitrogen dioxode. Gruchy.
