JUNE 20, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 5 Sports Slants - cont'd ....... turned to the NHL), Ted Green, Johnny McKenzie and a host of others. Now that Gordie Howe is about to enter the WHA fold, even though he may only play a year, what's going to happen to the NHL? My feeling is that within one year (two at the most), the NHL and the WHA will merge - like the AFL and NFL did in pro football. I'm not saying that all the present clubs who are part of the WHA will be part of the 'new' ama- lgamated league, but the better clubs, like Cleveland, New England, Houston, Winnipeg, Quebec and maybe a couple of others will stay on and form part of a new giant professional North American league. After all, how else are they going to stop that bidding war for players. Let's face it, money talks, and the way WHA teams have been throwing that money around, you can't blame a Bobby Hull, or a Gordie Howe, or a Marc Tard- if if he jumps to the WHA. And right now, the NHL can't do a thing about it. That's the only answer -- MERGE!!! As for Gordie Howe, I say, more power to him. Gordie may have had the sneakiest elbows in the NHL and he wasn't the most colourful guy on skates. But he knew how to score goals or pass a puck - and he was probably one of the best with his fists when he was called on to use them. Actually, he was probably the best that ever lived. And as for Bruce Norris, Ned Harkness and Jim Bishop of the Detroit Red Wing brass, I say, nuts to them! If they lost Gordie, it was all their fault - and don't be surprised if they lose a few more of their greats and ex -greats ... like maybe Alex Delvecchio!
