MAY I6, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE II BANK OF MONTREAL OFFICIAL OPENING A large crowd attended the formal opening of the new branch of the Bank of Montreal in Schreiber, the ribbon being cut by Reeve Harold J. McParland. Mr. McParland, Fraser McNaughton senior vice-president; Robert Jamieson, dis- trict manager, both of Winnipeg and George Korman, local manager, all spoke briefly. Prior to the ribbon cutting Mr. McNaughton presented Mr. McParland with the key to the old bank building to be retained by the town as a senior citizen's centre. . The new building, some 70 by 40 feet, on a solid cement slab, is of cement block construc- tion, the front wall almost entirely full length windows, adding to the feeling of space and aireness inside. The customer space will accommodate the longest ques without crowding, and of particular satisfaction is the privacy of the manager's office, and small cubicles where personal papers may be studied. The vault of course is greatly enlarged, a pleasant lounge provided for the staff, with comfortable rest rooms, dressing rooms. Other new conven- iences are air conditioning, inter-com system, and 'music while you bank' by stero. There are seven employees, counting the man- ager and assistant manager. The manager's home has always been above the bank but since this new building is a one story construction his home is now in another part of the town. For 'many years the bank's staff was supplied from the Lakehead, later and still, from Winn- ipeg and branches throughout the prairies - so many, that a Schreiber reunion could be held at short notice out there. For the most part their years in Schreiber have been enjoyable, making new friends with whom they've kept in touch; even the unfortunate wife who devel- oped an unconquerable case of claustrophobia - the hills which encircle the town depressing her, an understandable reaction to one used to wide open space. But for the most part the changing staff have become attached to the town, getting in- volved in community projects for the general welfare, appreciated, and remembered for their acceptance and relish of the humour peculiar to Schreiber, an old town and proud of its railway heritage. This new handsome building is a tribute to the Bank of Montreal's faith in Schreiber; their first branch here was in a small, former butcher shop in I9I2, remaining there only a year or so until they built the second branch on the main street, Scotia, where most of the business in the town was concentrated - shops town hall, and post office, and this third building in deference to public appeal, is again on the front street - almost across fron the former one. The new bank was built by Steve Pchyak = Winnipeg Construction Ltd. Photo below - Mr. McNaughton presents ribb- oned key of the former bank to Reeve McParland.
