PAGE 6 TERRACE BAY NEWS APRIL II,I973 COMMITTEES REPORT AT AUXILIARY MEETING Mrs. Lundberg, President, welcomed all the ladies, including a special guest, to the April meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Community Church on Monday evening. Minutes and correspondence were read by Mrs. Elaine Mannisto. Mrs. Marg Duriez gave the treasurer's report. Correspondence inclu- ded a thank you from Bill Jones, for a small gift he had been presented with, after doing an excellent job of painting the Church kit- chen. The Canadian Cancer Society requested a donation to carry on their important work. A donation of $25.00 was passed. A cheque was sent to the Association for the Mentally Retarded Schreiber-Terrace Bay branch, in appreciation for helping to arrange a recent guest appearance of Mr. W. Saya, of the Ontar- io Association of the Mentally Retarded. Mr. Saya makes no charge when asked to speak at any special meetings such as the Ladies Auxil- iary. Mrs. Lil Harris, Ways and Means Convener, reported the recent Mother and Daughter Guide and Brownie banquet had been very successful. Plans are now being formulated for the Christmas bazaar. Mrs. M. McKague presented the Worship study which is proving to be very interesting, as it involves all the members. Property convener, Mrs. L. Mecure, reported a wall can opener had been purchased for the kitchen. The Alter Committee were commended for the floral displays on the altar each Sunday. The first Sunday in April, the daffodils were presented by the Canadian Cancer Society, to signify the beginning of their ann- ual campaign for funds, and to bring their message of Hope =~ Cancer can be beaten. Mrs. Pam Jones, introduc- ed Mrs. Helen Jartus, of Schreibex, who was the guest speaker for the evening. Mrs. Jartus, who was invest- ed as a Serving Sister of the St. John's Ambulance, by Governor-General Vanier, in Ottawa, in I964, gave an en- lightening talk on the work and history of St. John's Ambulance Corps. She stated the Order had started 900 years ago, by the Brothers of St. John of Jerusalem and explained the significance of the eight pointed star. Florence Nightingale was awarded the Lady of Grace Award, St. John's highest honour. The Long Service medal earned after twelve years of service, bears the picture of Queen Victoria on it. Mrs. Jartus said among their many services to humanity, regardless of race, colour er creed they have a "Loan Cupboard", which lends hospital beds, to home patients; crutches and canes, to those who need them. Mrs. Lundberg thanked Mrs. Jartus for her talk and wished her well in her new home in British Columbia where she shortly will take up residence. Mrs. Isobel Delaronde was invivted to the Auxiliary to demonstrate her craft of Crochet- ing. The ladies had brought a crochet hook and some wool, and Mrs. Delaronde made a fun thing out of learning to crochet. She brought along a pillow cover, a poncho and hat, to show what can be done once one has mastered the art of chain, single and double crochet, which to many of the ladies may well have been written in Latin. Mrs. Van Eeden was also going to explain her craft of braid- ing rag rugs, but as the hour grew late, she will appear at a later meeting to demonstrate rug making.
