"ACTION FOR NORTH OF SUPERIOR" FORMED On' March 7th, a meeting with regards to Helicopter Hunting of Moose was held in Nipi- gon. : The meeting was opened at 7:30 p.m. by Mr. Bill Seguin, who gave a brief summary of the past history of complaints regarding helicop- ter hunting, and the seemingly fruitless result of these complaints. He explained that this meeting was called to organize all those people interested in the helicopter as a hunting tool into one unit all working for the same objec- tive. About fifty persons were present at this meeting, including two representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Mr. R.W. McGil- vary and Mr. C. Oswald. The aims of the group were pointed out as -the immediate aim.is to ban the transportation of moose and moose hunters in the field by helicopter; to educate local hunters to the fact that this new legislation restricting non -residents will not stop helicopter hunting; more distant objectives for the group may be stopping construction of an access road to the Black Penninsula, thus preserving the wilder- ness aspect of the area; promotion of the Na- tional Park concept that Robert Andras pre- pared for this area about a year ago; to pro- mote more action in the fish stocking for Lake Superior and the small inland lakes in this area; to look into Guide Laws for non-resifient dents coming to hunt and/or fish; to prevent free fly-in access to our wilderness for U.S. aircraft. Those present generally agreed with these aims (there were exceptions), but the meeting moved on to elect officers and select "a name for the committee. The name chosen for the group was "Action for North of Superior" and the executives chosen by the meeting were Chairman-Dave McCabe; Vice-Chairman-Roe Skill- en; Publicity Director-Monty Kerr; Secretary- Bill Seguin; Research Directors-Brent Sands; Ted Nyman; Dennis Almgren. Mr. Dave McCabe took over the meeting and led a lively discussion from the floor regard- ing the pros and cons of hunting moose by helicopter in Ontario. Mr. Ronald Sault spoke on behalf of the people at Lake Helen Mission and said he was in complete support of the cause of the com- mittee, and would do what he could to get any information which may lead to the stopping of helicopter use in moose hunting. Mr. McGilvary of the Ministry of Natural Resources told the meeting that he thought that using helicopters in the hunting of big game was not a feasible venture, in that it could not likely pay for itself, and with this known, he suspected we would not again see 3 helicopters used in big game hunting in Ontar- io. The committee hoped that this would be so, but stated they would continue to try to get legislation to guarantee this, just in case someone found a way to make it pay. If any groups are interested in hearing arguments presented at the meeting, or seeing the tapes, they should write to "Action for J North of Superior", Mr. Dave McCabe, Red Rock.
