Bobby Hull, the mighty Golden Jet who snub- bed a chance for a sixth 50-goal season in the NHL to put his John Henry on a WHA contract, scored six goals and added five assists in three games the week before and was tied for eighth spot as of last Wednesday with 38 goals and 36 assists for 74 points. Not bad consid- ering he missed I4 or I5 games with his new team, Winnipeg Jets. The other familiar face is also called Bobby. Some call him Super Kid, but his real name is Bobby Orr. Orr, who, by the time he's completed his NHL career will have probably shattered all records ever chalked up by de- fencemen, had bulldozed his way into ninth spot in the NHL's individual scoring race as of last Tuesday. Orr, who also missed several league games due to an injured knee, had I8 goals and 55 assists for 73 points, just 20 points behind teammate Phil Esposito, the leader and a good bet to win another scoring crown. * kk kk * While discussing scoring statistics, it should be noted that the highest scoring unit in the NHL right now is not the French Conn- ection line, so highly-publicized by most writers, of Buffalo Sabres. Granted, the Sabres' high-flying trio of Rene Robert, Richard Martin and Gilbert Perreault have been getting a lot of ink and have been the key to Buffalo's successes. But the top producing line in the NHL be- longs to Chicago Black Hawks. The other Hull of pro hockey, Dennis, is having his best year ever and so are linemates Jim Pappin and Pit Martin. The trio has com- bined to score 88 goals (prior to last Wednes- day) and a total of 2I9 points. Hull and Pap- pin each have 32 goals and all three are right up there giving Esposito a run for the Art Ross Trophy. . Robert, Richard Martin and Perreault, mean- while, had 204 points as of last Wednesday and a total of 920 goals. do de dei de de ide Oh, and in case you're a Toronto Maple Leaf fan, their top point producer isn't, as you might have thought, captain Dave Keon. Tops on the Leaf scoring list is Rick Kehoe with 60 points and on the top 25 list. Last week, by the way, was the first time this season a Leaf made the top 25 column. Those poor Leafs, they've sure got their problems. ge do de did Former Maple Leaf Eddie Shack, who's hav- ing a half-decent season with Pittsburgh Pen- guins, was making jokes one day about his lack of formal education. He said he was kick -ed out of grade two for not shaving ... and he was promoted from grade three because he loaned the teacher his car. *iR ik fix Detroit Red Wings, who are finding it tough to overtake the stubborn Buffalo Sabres for that last playoff spot in the east, have two games left with Chicago and, as far as the Wings are concerned, they probably wish they wouldn't have to play those two games -- one is March I0, the other March 3I. The Wings, you see, haven't beaten the Hawks since April Fool's day in I970. That losing streak extends to I4 games. ek kik od) ik Hey, do you want to win $I0? Okay, here's what you do. Send me the order of finish which you think the teams in both the east and west division of the NHL will wind up (in other words, the final standings). Unfortun- ately I can only afford one $I0 prize, so there'll be only one winner. The earlier the postmark, the better chance you have. The first 'perfect' set of standings I receive will get the IO smackers. In case of a tie, where two or three contestants' answers are postmarked on the same date, I'll have to pick one name out of a hat (you have to trust me). Send your answers to me, Ray Shank, I589 Betts St., Windsor, Ont. Deadline for entries is March I5. Any entries received after Mar- ch I9 will be rejected. One more thing .... to clarify the contest, here's an example of what you must send me: East Division - I. Montreal - IO0 pts; 2. Boston - 97 pts.; 3. New York - 96 pts.; continued page 4
