His father sparked his interest in guitar and it was from him that Rod first learned to play country and blues. In a recent folk festival in Thunder Bay Rod placed first and travelled to Toronto and placed second there (in competition with musicians from all over Ontario). He is now an expert blues player and enjoys banjo as well as guitar. He does quite a bit of Dylan, Van Morrison, Taj Mahal and Eric Anderson as well as writing his own music. Greg Reed, 20 and Maureen McKechran, I8, are the only two who were not involved with Summer sounds '72, but only because they didn't audi- tion for it. They are both very well known to Thunder Bay audiences. They like to do Dylan, Bruce Cockburn, Fraser and DeBolt and their own original music. Maureen is said to have "the voice of a bird" and Greg's piano playing is described as "phenomanal". The show will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday the 23rd at the high school auditorium. Prices to be announced on posters displayed around town. Let's pack the auditorium as tight as it was for Summer Sounds '72!. RECREATION NEWS Yoga Course: The Recreation Office is still receiving names of persons interested in taking a Yoga course. A number of communities along the North Shore are presently attempting to asses the interest for such a course. If interest is sufficient in one, two or three North Shore Communities, then a programme will definately be set up for those who register. The Yoga course will be approximately I2 weeks in length with one session being held each week. Approximate cost for the course would be $25.00 per registrant. If you require additional information or would like to regis- ter, please leave your name and phone number at the Recreation Office. "Opportunities for Youth": A reminder to students that the Recreation Office has all the information on the Federal Government's "Opportunities for Youth" program If you would like to receive additional infor- mation on this programme, simply drop into the Recreation Office. On Wednesday, February 2Ist, the district representative for the "Opportunities for Youth programme, Mr. Bill Yder, will be available to meet with any interested students in the large meeting room of the Recreation Centre from 6:00 to I0:00 p.m. This is your opportunity to find out more about the programme and how you can apply. . Hockey Action: No representative hockey games are sched- uled at the arena this week. The next home Junior game will be played on Thursday, Febru- ary 22nd, at 8:00 p.m. against the Marathon "Mercuries". 'At both the North Shore Minor Hockey League level and the Intermediate Hock- ey level, league playoffs will be commencing on February 24th. More information regarding the playoffs will be posted in the Recreation Centre next week. Royal Life and Red Cross Instructors Courses: The Recreation Office has received informa- tion on the following courses which will be held during winter break: Insturctors Course - This Red Cross and Royal Life Instructors course will be held from Mar- ch I9th to the 23rd at the YM-YWCA in Thunder Bay. Candidates must be I7 years of age on or before the completion of this course. Candi- dates must also hold both Red Cross Leader Award and the Royal Life Bronze Medallion. Deadline for application is Friday, March 2nd. Application forms are available at the Recrea- tion Office. Requalification for Insturctors - The Red Cross and Royal Life Re-qualification for Instructors course will be held Sunday, March I8th at the YM-YWCA in Thunder Bay. Registration fee is $2.00 and the deadline for application is Fri- day, February 23rd. T1972 Recreation Discs No Longer Acceptable: All members of the Terrace Bay Recreation Association are reminded that the brown rec- reation discs and the yellow swim pool discs will no longer be accepted for any activities. The new I973 discs have been available at the Recreation Office for the past two weeks. Be sure to pick yours up. COMING EVENTS; February 15-16-17-I8 - Terrace Bay Winter Carnival.
