OCTOBER 25, 1972 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 17 LETTER TO THE EDITOR Many, including myself, have considered the for- mation of the Lake Superior District Board of Education a colossal error. Education costs since its inception have spiralled to ridiculous heights. Spending appears to be totally unrestricted and ex- tremely questionable with a disregard for public funds. Limitations are ignored. Town councils protestations of injudicious and costly activities are completely unheeded. In short, this Board has assumed quasi dictatorial powers from which have resulted irresponsible extra- vagances. This sad situation plus the fact that education has not improved over the previous system, has prompted many criticism throughout the province. The most re~- cent occurred last week in Thunder Bay at a public meeting where Mrs. Fairservice from Manitouwadge accused the Board of inefficiency and irresponsibility. Mrs. Fairservice bombshelled the gathering with the fact that the Board has spent 1.25 million on homes. This amazing declaration, if accurate, and it must be for Mrs. Fairservice is a member of this Board, urges the necessity of immediate steps to curb this totally unreasonable spending by stricter supervision by coun- cil of all Board expenditures and with the powers to veto. | cannot understand how the towns of Manitouwadge Marathon and Terrace Bay did not publicly challenge this ludicrous spending and unbelievable extravagance, The cost share system with Schreiber paying 5% is farcial . Many Schreiber taxpayers working in Terrace Bay enjoy Schreiber's low education cost while Terr- ace Bay and Marathon residents must pay the bulk of the education costs because their American employers being under the gun are reluctant to protest this un- equitable arrangement. It is unfortunate that there are not more Mrs. Fairservices. Mrs. Fairservice and the two board members from Marathon deserve a lot of credit for publicly critizing the District Board. Manitouwadge and Marathon are indeed fortunate in having such representatives. Unfortunate indeed is the Community who has not someone with the interest and encourage to publicly express disproval of activities detrimental fo the wel- fare of the community. Apathy, fear of expression, lack of moral obliga- tions and lack of moral conviction in our leaders, leaves a community totally unprotected against mis- management and abuse. | am positive that should someone poll all the Reeves and Councilmen in our district, they would find very few who approve the behaviour, exist- - ance and operation of the District Board. | have on many occasions discussed the activities of the Board with many people from various communi- ties and always encountered the same antagonism against this group. Always you hear the same story that this group is too powerful to buck. On this point, | violently disagree. We are living in a democratic country where dictatorial behaviour is completely unacceptable by reasonable and respon- sible people. We are indeed moral cowards when we sit back and accept without an effort, behaviour which is un- reasonable and irresponsible. Mrs. Fairservice has set a good example. Let us emulate her by getting together as determined peo- ple. It is about time that our municipal leaders made a concerted determined effort to correct this situation. It is indeed about time that an investigation be made . The District Board has been the target of many accusations. Public opinion is against this Board. If these accusations are untrue, then much good will come out of an investigation by clearing the air and improving public relations. Signed: J. Adamo.
