EARLY RETIREMENT FOR BILL LIDKEA Mr. Lidkea, a conductor with the C .P.R., has taken an early retirement due to ill health. His first job, at the age of 14, was as delivery boy for the Caccamo Grocery Store, and he recalls with pride, the first paycheck he handed to his mother. In 1925 he entered the service of the C.P.R., working first in the shop as fitter's helper when Herb Stewart was the machinist. In 1940 he went on the trainmen's list and 1943 became conductor in which capacity he retired on pension. Eileen (Mrs. Lidkea) was given a party in the Legion, she being a longtime member of their auxil- iary. Ms. Lidkea and their family were also invited and it was an evening full of laughter over old-times, singing old songs and recalling the pranks and parties of younger years. The stories related were not only of 'workin' on de railroad' but, working on the highway! Mr. and Mrs. Jack Byers of Thunder Bay attended the party and Mrs. Byers added much by her piano playing. On behalf of the auxiliary Mrs. Georgina Davis, the president, presented Eileen with a costume pin and their good wishes. Before leaving Schreiber for a new home in Thunder Bay Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lidkea were enter- tained at a dinner party arranged in the Restaurant LeBlanc by their family = Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Gaily) Welbourne, Mr. and Mrs. Barry (Brenda) Harper, Miss Karen and Miss Brenda Lidkea, with old friends also attending. The head table was centred with a cake circled by a miniature train. On behalf of the group their daughter, Gail, (Mrs. Welbourne) presented a living room chair as a farewell gift. Among other gifts received was a gold tray on which their grandchildren's pictures were framed. And, another gift, which delighted Mr. Lidkea was a miniature replica of the 'caboose' which had béen | his for so many years, complete even to the number. The group went on after dinner for a social even- ing. Photos by |. McCuaig - Bill Lidkea leaving Schreiber.
