TERRACE BAY NEWS A VOL. 15 NO, 17 APRIL 27, 1972 CONTACT CANADA The Travel and Exchange Division administered for the first time during the summer of 1971 an i nternational youth exchange programme known as Contact Canada. The programme was open to per= sons between the ages of 18 and 21 and at the time involved some 240 participants from Canada and abroad. Due to the tremendous success of Contact Canada last year, it is planned that the programme this summer will be expanded to include 180 Can- adians and an equal number of young people from abroad. The program aims: (a) To enable young Canad- ians to become aware of their role as citizens of the world and gain insights which will help them play a better citizenship role at home, and (b) To provide a suitable Canadian programme for - young people from other countries in which young Canadians are participating. The programme is open to all young men and women, students or young workers between the ages of 18 and 21 (as of January 1, 1972), who show a strong interest in learning more about Canada in an international context. All participants are required to have a working knowledge of Canada's official languages. Those residing in Canada must also be Canadian citiz- ens and required to contribute the sum of $100. towards the costs of their participation. Trans- portation costs, visits, food and accommodation etc... will be paid by the Travel and Exchange Division. Contact Canada sessions are of 3 weeks dur=- ation. The participants will have the choice of one of the following sessions: (n June 28 to July 18 (2) July 15 to August 4 (3) August 1 to August 21 - They will also have the choice of one of the following locations across Canada: Halifax, Trois-Rivieres, London, St-Boniface, Calgary, or Victoria. Participants should note that the sessions in St-Boniface will be held in both official lan- guages, whereas those in Trois Rivieres will be in French only and those in London, Halifax, Calg- ary and Victoria will be held in English. The programme is designed to allow partici- pants to learn as much as possible about the his- tory, economy and culture of central Canada and one of the six regions mentioned above. Each three week session will involve 120 part- icipants and will begin with a four-day stay in Ottawa. This will include a visit of the city, the surrounding area, attendance at conferences as well as an excursion to Montreal. Onthe fifth day this group of 120 will be divided into two contingents of sixty persons each. The participants who will be involved in sessions to be held in Victoria, Calgary or Trois Rivieres will first visit Toronto. Those who will be taking part in sessions to be held in Halifax, London or St-Boniface will leave first for Quebec Dity. Following a three- day visit to these provincial capitals, the partici- pants will leave in groups of twenty for a 15-day session in either Victoria, Calgary, St-Boniface, London, Trois-Rivieres or Halifax.
