In the matter of baking, recipes were handed down from generation to generation, at times even the flour having to be ground. Gifts were usually hand made articles, since store bought gifts were hard to come by. Mrs. Soughton discussed the traditions which have been handed down and explained the meanings of some of them, such as the star, the wreath, candles and the Christmas tree. Holly and Carol Brown, representing carollers, knocked at the door and were invited in to sing for the ladies. Following this, a Christmas game was played, before Santa Claus arrived to distribute the gifts. Carols were sung with Mrs. Ellen Hodgkiss at the piano. A delicious Christmas lunch was served by Mes- dames Vera Kennedy, Barbara Wise, Isobel Marsh and Gertrude Soughton.
