The first item of correspondence was a thank you note from the Motorcycle Brigade for the light lunch provided for them by Council, for patrolling the town on Hallowe'en and keeping vandalism down to an absolute minimum. Moores" of Terrace Bay requested permission fo erect a new sign over their store, under their por- tion of the canopy = permission was granted. Insurnace has been placed on the new Fire Hall. The Fire Department stated there had been no fires, regular fire practice had been held and the Volun- teer Firemen were working hard to finish the inside of the new Fire Hall, all by volunteer labour. The Building Inspector reported one permit = $700. Accounts were as follows:= Township = 20,748.50; Hydro - 8,891.50; Library - 1,064.18; Recreation Committee - 8, 992.15. Al Allen, who is retiring as Councillor this year, expressed his appreciation to the Reeve and Council for their co-operation during his tenure in office. Roy Bray commended the Hydro Department on having the Christmas lights up on Simcoe Plaza, and stated the Sparkle Contest would soon be underway, and will be advertised in the local paper. Dave Desrosiers, also retiring from Council, ex- pressed his thanks to the Reeve and Council for the co-operation and interest he had received over the past 5 years, and wished the in-coming Council the very best. Reeve Covanaugh responded by com- mending Dave for his work on Council and particu- larly the completion of the Fire Hall, which has been Dave's main interest this past year. 25 Reeve Cavanaugh added that he welcomed the two | new=-comers to Council for the new year. KIMBERLY-CLARK PLAN POLLUTION CONTROL PROJECT Kimberly-Clark of Canada Limited and ifs asso= ciated Canadian companies will spend nearly $9- million on air and water pollution control projects at mill and plant operations in Ontario over a three year period 1970-'72. In a progress report fo its employees regarding continuing efforts to control and improve air and water pollution problems, the company lists the following projects: - installation of a clarifier system at ifs St. Catharines' mill that will process effluent to meet and even exceed OWRC requirements in removing suspended solids presently discharged into the canal. The $1,200,000 program will be completed in 1971. The mill's boilers are being converted to natural gas and oil from coal to ensure cleaner air at a cost of $240,000 with completion scheduled for 1972. - installation of the most modern facilities for water treatment and for effluent control systems to guarantee clean air and water at the company's new Kleenex tissue plant which is nearing completion at Huntsville. Cost of these built-in systems totals $2,500,000. The new plant will commence opera- tions next Spring. : - two major projects are underway at the Terrace Bay mill - installation of evaporators for air pollu=- tion abatement to be completed by 1972, and con- version of the mill's boilers to fuel oil from coal this year . Total cost of the two projects is $1-mil- fion. - a $4,000,000 air and water control program is being carried out at the giant Spruce Falls Power and Paper Co.
