PEE WEE HOCKEY Canadiens Declared Champs at Kiwanis Carnival The local Pee Wee Hockey league came to a dramatic conclusion last Saturday after- noon when the Canadiens came through the best of three playoff series with the Black Hawks with two wins and a tie. Conway and McDonald of the Canuck team were the pace setters for the winners while Harvey played his heart out for the Hawks scoring their only goal. Hawks started with a terrific drive that netted them one goal from the stick of Brian Harvey on a neat pass out from Joey Wig, Canadiens came back to tie it all up in the second period on a goal by Dave "Dipsey Doodle" McDonald. Early in the third, Mervin "Legs" Conway fought his way into Doug Craig's door step and parked the puck behind him in fine style. The Hawks put on the pressure in the lest minute and a half when the goal- ie was pulled from the net end six attackers stormed around the Canadien's stronghold. But stellar defense on the part of the Canucks kept the Hawks off the score sheet and the game ended Canadiens 2 Hawks 1. This past week end an All Star Pee Vee team travelled on their stomachs to Marathon. "On their stomachs" is a very literal trans- lation of exactly what happened. Chocolate bars, Pop, peanuts, potato chips, gum, milk, oh, my achin' stomach, The newsy on that run made more in an hour and a half than he ever made at Dufferin in a whole season. As far as the whole afternoon was con- cerned it seemed that the hockey game was secondary. The Marathon Maple Leafs iced a well coached team who opened the scoring midway through the first period on a scram- bled play in front of the Terrace Bay net. Marathon went two up in the second on a neat passing play that left the puck carrier wide open to come in on Doug Craig, the All Star goalie, and dump the puck in the net, Late in the second period Joey Wig set his line mate Brien Harvey up on a lovely pass play that saw the rubber disc end up behind the Marathon goalie, The play see-sawed back and forth as the boys played hockey that at times brought the more than 200 fans to their feet. Late in the third period with less than 2 minutes to play the Terrace Bay All Star goalie was pulled and Conway was thrown in as the extra attacker with LeBlanc, Wig and Harvey and Rowson and Wood, In these last hectic seconds the All Stars carried the play to the Maple Leafs and culminated a terrific pressure period when Harvey blasted home 7 (cont. in next col.)
