BANQUET CONCLUDES LADIES' PLAYDOWNS Last week's Ontario Ladies' Curling Championships ended on Wednesday evening when the visitors were entertained at a Banquet sponsored by Ontario Curling Association. Immediately prior to the dinner hour - the Township of Terrace Bay were hosts at a social hour held in the Lounge of Terrace Bay Motor Hotel . Local Chairman of the event Syl Duquette welcom- ed those present, congratulated the winners and asked Father Gvora to say Grace. She then introduced head table guests who were: - Reeve and Mrs. W.E. Cavanaugh, Mrs. Lila Gray (Ontario Ladies Curling Association Secretary Treasurer), Mrs. Eleanor Barbini (Ontario Ladies Curling Association President). Mrs. Norma Crockford, (President Terrace Bay Ladies Cur!- ine Club), Father Gvora, Dr. and Mrs. Brian Mc- Donald. The former is president of the Terrace Bay Men's Curling Club. | Mrs. Ellen Hodgkiss was accompanist for the Antheny and provided a musical background during dinner. Flowers on the Head Table, a striking arrangement of red Carnations, were provided by the Men's Club Much credit to her hard working committee was given by Syl Duquette. Acting in various capacities preparing for the event were: - Chairman - Syl Duquette; Co-Chairman - Norma Crockford; Draw - Peggy Wellings; Chief Umpire - Anne Latour; Pub- licity - Betty Bouchard; Receptions and Banquet - Ollie Chapman; Decorations - Connie Cvitkovitch a and Marj Liebrock; Luncheons - Ollie Chapman and Marj Liebrock; Host Drivers - Isabel Ferrier; Dorothy Rafalant, and Ivy Pattison and Programs - Betty Bouchard and Ida Romanuk. Norma Crockford extended best wishes for success in Calgary to the Kingston Rink and presented the attractive Draw Card which had been prepared by Marj Liebrock to skip Kay O'Neill. She also thanke club members who had contributed and helped in the kitchen during the event. Congratulations to the winneres were |4extended by Reeve Cavanaugh and Eleanor Barbini who men- tioned it was appropriate timing as the Kingston Club are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. She also presented crests and pins to the winners, Kay O'Neil, Thelma Graves, Shirley Keely and Doreen Main and to runners-up Betty Sim, Margaret Henry, Jean Parker and Hilda Bamford. Kathleen Hall, delegate from Eastern Ontario pre- sented a Past President's Pin to Mrs. Barbini. | PAGcc ' Atikokan O'KEEFE MIXED CURLING PLAYDOWNS HELD whet TERRACE BAY The Terrace Bay Curling Club hosted the 1970¢ O'Keefe Northwestern Playdowns this past weekend. Seven of the eight zones were represented by teams from the Curladrome, Port Arthur Golf and Country Club, Red Rock, Beardmore, Atikokan, Dryden and Kenora. The visiting teams had phe 9 - 12 Thursday mor- ning to try out our ice with some practice time. The official meeting and draw was at 2:00 P.M. with the first game at 3:00 P.M. Reeve Cavanaugh led the rinks in a grand march around the ice, then threw the first rock to start the playdowns. There were two draws a day and after the 7th draw Sunday morning, Simpson of Port Arthur Country Club and Kuzmenski of Dryden were tied with six wins and one loss. . They played off at 2 p.m. Sunddy and Simpson of Port Arthur came out on top ina 8 - 7 game. His team was awarded silver trays by Morey Hamilton district manager of O'Keefe's. Simpson now goes on to Sault Ste. Marie to represent Northwestern Ontario in the Northerns. On Friday the visiting teams were entertained at a luncheon at the Terrace Bay Motor Hotel sponsored by the Kimberly Clark Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd., Saturday at 5:30 there was a cocktail hour for the teams and guests sponsored by the Township of Terrace Bay and then a banquet sponsored by a O'Keefe Brewing Company. The committee responsible for the mixed ploveae and the Men's and Ladies' Curling Clubs are to be congratulated on a big job well done.
