Photo by Inez McCuaig FATHER CARY SPEAKS AT GIRLS" CLUB DINNER The annual Mother and Daughter Banquet of the Catholic Girls' Club was held in the Superior Dining Room with ninety-five attending. Guest speaker was Father R.A.Carey ;of Red Rock and other guests of honor were Rev. Sisters Frances Joseph and Frances Therese, Father J.M.Cano of Schreiber Parish, Mrs. Bill Cocks, president of the Catholic Women's League, club sponsors and Mrs.Harry Shack, club director. Father Carey spoke on Marriage. Muriel Holmes gave the formal address of welcome and Cathy McGrath the Toast to Mothers, with the response by Mrs. D.Connell . Mrs.W.G.Furlonger and Mrs. Bill Lidkea were co- hostesses for a surprise luncheon honoring Mrs. Jim Singleton who is leaving Schreiber to live in Fort William. On her last day of work in Chapples store the staff gathered to present a Kenwood blanket to Mrs. Singleton and Mr.Johnson, the manager, presented a painting. Ray Cote and Bill Woodrow of the highschool staff are in Toronto taking summer courses. Miss Nicolle Ouelette of Montreal will spend two weeks' vacation at home here. Mr .and Mrs.Walter Harris are visiting their son Walter Harris Jr., and his family in Peterborough. Mr .and Mrs.Jack Johnston will spend the holidays camping in the district and visiting in Winnipeg. Mr.and Mrs.Russell Macadam met their daughter Sharon and her husband (Mr.and Mrs.A.R.Dejeet) of Toronto, in Sault Ste.Marie. They will all return to Schreiber after a camping trip. Mr .and Mrs.Oscar Laine have with them Mr.Laine' father, Kust Laihe of Port Arthur and their daughter Ilona (Mrs.Dick Remillard) and family of Sault Ste. Marie. Mr.and Mrs.Laine will return to the Soo with the Remillard's for a visit. Mr .and Mrs. Bill Holland of Toronto are visiting Mrs.Holland Sr., and Mr.and Mrs.Pat Guina, com- ing particularly to see Mrs.Ray Alexander of Baton Rouge, La. THE NEWS Winning team and staff members Mr .R.Guillet and Mr.T.Speziale (the teachers dressed as Indians) Photo by Inez McCuaig TABLOID SPORTS DAY AT HOLY ANGELS The third annual tabloid sports day of Holy An- gels Separate School was well attended by parents and friends of the students: Adding to the occasion were the gay Indian costumes worn by teachers R.Guillet and T.Speziale who were in charge of the affair. There were twenty-five events and with twenty- five teams of five each the competition was keen and vociferously encouraged. The winning team was Maria Veneziano, Maureen Campbell, Rose- mary Speziale, Mary McGrath, Joe Figliomeni and Frank Muia. : Contests included skipping, push-ups, rope jump- ing, ball kick, ring-in-the bottles, blindfold walk, bat balance, standing broad jump, balance walk, ball on spoon, bowling, ball in basket, nailing, base running, horseshoes, ball on hoop toss, bad- minton keepup, bean bag toss, ball toss and pick- up, standing and sitting high jump and pingpong toss . Some events were planned for skill and a few for just fun and the audience enjoyed them all. Re- freshments were served midway in the program. The Rev .Sisters of the school staff assisted and also several high school students whose help was greatly appreciated. Among those who were in Port Arthur to congrat- ulate Marlene Birch on her graduation as a nurse were her parents, brothers and sisters--Mr.and Mrs. Geoff Birch, Bryan,. Philip, Linda and Terry-Lynne, Mr.and Mrs.George Birch, Mrs.Ted Wilson, Mrs. George McBride and the Misses Bea McBride, Mari- lyn Pearson, Carole Lalonde and Doris McParland, Mr .and Mrs.Cyril Sparkes and Dale Sparkes . Mr.and Mrs.Rene Bedard have with them the for- mer's mother, Mrs.Eva Bedard, and his brother Lucien of North Bay. Mr .and Mrs. Bob Fournier spent the weekend vis- iting Mr.Fournier Sr., who has b een in St. Josephs Hospital, Port Arthur for two months. Mr .and Mrs.George Duncan, Mr.and Mrs . Bill Duncan of McCreary, Man.and Mr.and Mrs.Leo Aber of Sault Ste.Marie over the weekend.
