FACTS ON ECONOMIC SYSTEM FOR STUDENTS (from Canadian Chamber of Comm .News Letter) oo IS MOVING towards one of the highest rates of labour force expansion in its entire history. Thousands of young people are entering the work force for the first time. In fact, the number of people in the 20-24 age group in the labour force is expected to increase by 33% from 1965 to 1970, and by 57% over the decade as a whole. These young people will be tomorrow's leaders. They should have a good grasp of Canada's business system and how it works. The first annual review of the Econom- ic Council of Canada has -made it clear that competitive enterprise and individual initiative have a tremendous role to play in achieving desirable goals for the future. The Report's introduction speaks of achieving these goals in a free and predominantly private enterprise market economy. This places a new emphasis on the work of Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade in their contacts with youth. This is one reason why the Canadian Chamber, this year, is expanding its program to place booklets on Canadian opportunity and our economic system in the hands of graduating high school students. The Terrace Bay Chamber of Commerce were one of the few Chambers in Northwestern Ontario to take part in distributing booklets and questionntir- es produced by the Canadian Chamber. Local president, N.Cornthwaite, last week ad- dressed students in Terrace Bay schools and gave each one copies of the booklets. WATER SAFETY - Have your children taught to swim as soon as they can understand instructions. It is sur- prising how early a child can learn this safety skill and how soon they can become water babies. The average person can learn to swim in a few lessons--why not have your whole family taught before your vacation?
