A watchmaker makes a conservative estimate that the walnut clock was made in the 1840's. It is 7 ft. Zin. tall and the figures on the dial are handpainted. At one time the clock was a calen- dar and marked the lunar changes but now it just tells the time, accu- rately. Mr. Sparkes would be interested in learning more on the antiquity or his- tory of his heirloom. YEAR'S LAST MEETING HELD BY COUNCIL The Municipal Council held its last regular meet- ing of the year December 9th with all present. Summing up the year's work, Reeve Harness said th at, although this council could not take credit for the spade work in some instances, it nevertheless was happy to see the new subway under construction; the town Police force inaugurated; memb ership in the District Health Unit secured; the handsom reno- vation of council chamber and the changes and re-~ placements to water mains, resulting in much improv- ed water pressure in several areas. He thanked the members, Mr.Skinner, the clerk- treasurer, and E.Borutski, road superintendent, for the co-operation they had given. He and all coun- cillors expressed regret at losing Mrs.McCuaig from the board and their appreciation of her co-oper- ation. Mrs.McCuaig thanked them and said it had been a privilege and pleasure to serve for the past four years and that she particularly appreciated the men's co-operation, being the first (and only) woman elected to council. Mrs.Chas. Pearson, who is a constant onlooker at council meetings, was commended for her evident interest in town administration. Regarding the CPR's proposal that the town take } over the chlorination plant it was decided that this might be considered with the agreement th at the Company pay 50% of the operating cost plus super- vision and overhead, as the town has been doing. Cyril Sparkes was appointed for a three year term to the High School Board and W.Kinney, Frank Fummerton and Archie McColeman appointed for two year terms to the rink committee. A free period on parking meters was set and Mr. Harness reported on the meeting held to consider a district Home for Aged. R.C.Skinner was appointed to act as town representative to the planning com- mittee for this project. The Reeve also reported on meeting held to discuss the appointment of a district assessor. Council are most interested in this idea since it would relieve the council of the unpleasant duty of sitting as a court of revision in its own com- munity, a duty which could be delegated to oth er citizens. The minor hockey association was granted permis- sion to sell candy door-to-door, to raise funds. It was decided to carry out snow ploughing at Walker Lake in same routine as previous years. Reply to an appeal from Steve Petrushack for tax rebale was that such appeal should have come up at Court of Revision and council have no authority to consider it now.
