Ray Potvin is spending his va- cation in Toronto with Buddy Lidkea and with other friends in Montreal. LOCAL COUPLE JOIN PENSIONERS TOUR Mr .and Mrs .Forbes Macadam left on Sunday to join a party of 150 CPR pensioners taking a six week tour in the British Isles and Europe where five coun- tires will be visited. The group,designated as "The Cay Viennese Tour, will sail to England on the Em- press of England and return on the Empress of Canada Mrs .Louis Karns and her three daughters have re- joined Mr.Karns who is transferred here from London to replace A.R.Parchem as B.and B. Master with the C.P.R. Mrs .Florence Higgens of Fort William is here visiting her neices, Mrs.Fred Harness and Mrs. Alvin Slater. LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER HONOURED Jack Bryson, chief lighthousekeeper at Slate Island was recently presented with a twenty-five year long service award, recognizing his long period of meri- torious service. The presentation, aboard the CCGS Alexander Henry, was made by Len Burden, represen- ting F.K..McKean, district marine: agent of Parry Sound, with members of the agency staff and the ship' crew present. Jack (John R.) is well known in Schreiber and . along the north shore of Lake Superior, making his home in Schreiber during the off-season. He first joined the Department of Transport in 1939 as wireless operator on the lighthouse tender Murray Stewart and, in the same spring, transferred from the ship to the Cove Island light station at the entrance to Georgian Bay where he served as radio Beacon operator until close of navigation in 1940. He then went to the radio aviation department until 1944 when he joined the department of transport manning pool for allied merchant ships. At the end of the war Mr .Bryson was assigned to air service, serving in Yellowknife, N.W.T. and Edmonton until 1948 when he came to Slate Island as combined lightkeeper and radio beacon operator . With two assistants, Gustav Oldson of Port Arthur and Walter Stokes of Schreiber, he now is in charge of the light station, with radio beacon, fog alarm and navigation light and also is official weather ob- server for the meteorological branch of the depart- ment. Mr .Bryson's oldest son, Rodney, interested in his father's stories of life at sea, joined the Canadian Navy a year ago and is now serving on H.M.C.S. Y ukon, although he did not enter the communica- tions branch but chose instead the mechanical depart- ment.
