April 1964 CURLING CLUB NEWS With a week to go before the Men's Annual Bonspiel all forty-eight entries have been filled. It looks like another real successful bonspiel for our club again this year. The executive are asking for volunteers to act as referees and help with the bonspiel, so if you are not curling your help will be greatly appreciated. The ladies Annual Bonspiel is ready to roltl this Friday with the opening ceremony and .° first draw starting at 11:00 A.M. The Jadies are also asking for volunteers from the Men's Club to hélp with their bonspiel so drop in and offer your services. You will no doubt enjoy yourself, DATES TO REMEMBER SEMI-ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, Friday, May lst. YEARLY WIND-UP -- BANQUET & SOCIAL, Sat.May 9th FIRST AID COURSE OUTLINED Mrs, Helen Jartus, corps staff officer, installed the following officers at the meet- ing of St.John A/N #337:- Mrs. Dorothy Rumme Division Supt., Charles Levigne, Division officer, and Mrs. Althea Graham, RN, Nursing Officer. Mrs. Graham was presented with her Warrant as Nursing Officer. The annual inspection, by Brig. Eric Snow of Toronto, will take place on June 23rd. Word was received from Mrs. P.Robinson, Provincial Supt.of Nursing regarding the wearing of old type uniforms by women brigade members. These will be acceptable as long as they are alike in very detail, until such time as new ones can be secured. Mrs. Helen Dooley, secretary, stated par- ticulars of the senior first aid course being given this week by instructors Roly Wills, secretary Schreiber-Terrace Bay Branch Mrs.Rummery and Mrs.Jartus. This is an accelerated four night course of three hours each lesson and is being taken by three from Jackfish Lake, two from Terrace Bay and the rest from Schreiber. The Highway first aid post is being moved this year from Schreiber to the Chalet Res- taurant at Jackfish Lake. Among those attending zone meeting, Can. Legion in Schreiber were M. Hawes, W. Smith, 0.Boutiliere, Manitouwadge; W.Lee, R.MacKay, P, Johnston, Marathon; J.Clancy, G.Daniels, W. Anderson, Terrace Bay; J.Sawyer, Len Hiller, Neil Ross, Schreiber with W.Fraser and D, Gunter, Schreiber, as visitors. THE NEWS -- Jane is pictured at the left above. THUNDER BAY DISTRICT STUDENT WINS ELEMENTARY PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST Dianne Nylund of Riverdale School, R.R.#3, Fort William, won the district final of the Ontario School Trustees! and Ratepayers' Assoc iation elementary schools public speaking con- test at the Fort William City Hall on March 20th. She represented Northwestern Ontario at the provincial finals in Toronto on March 30. Dianne, a 14-year old grade eight student, competed in the district final with seven other contestants. Her topic was "Know Candda Better." D.C.Exley, Fort William, representing the Ontario School Trustees' and Ratepayers' Assoc iation whith sponsors the contest, welcomed the students and audience to the final. Mr. Exley organized the contest in the Thunder Bay district, made all the arrangements for the zone final and acted as chairman for the con- test. He expressed his appreciation to the Lakehead Toastmasters Club for their fine co-operation in acting as judges. fF.R.Perrier acted as chairman of the five-member judging panel. J. Currie, president of District 3, Ontario Municipal Electric Association, congratulated the students on their excellent speeches. He mentioned that in six years attendance at the zone finals, this was the first year in his recollection that all the contestants were girls. He welcomed the opportunity, he said, to be present to represent the OMEA, an assoc- iation of over 350 municipal electric utilitie which co-sponsors the contest at the district level. "The OMEA considers this contest an impor- tand investment in the future of the province. We are interested in helping the young people of today learn to express their own ideas and opinions with increasing self-confidente," he said. The other competitors were: Jane Colborne, 13, grade eight, Terrace Bay Public School (who ranked 2nd in the contest); Irene Zeleny 12, Gr.7 St.Hilary's Separate School, Red Rock Linda Ann Walker, 13, Gr.8, Manitouwadge Schoo Joan Murray 13, Gr.8, Robt.Moore School, Fort Frances; Patricia Taylor, 13, Gr.8, Pinewood School Dryden; Heather Stearns 13, Gr.8 King George V.School, Kenora and Barbara Saxberg,
