CENTENNIAL PROJECTS OUTLINED Eligible projects (in brief) as outlined by the C en- tennial grants programme include 'any project under- taken by a municipality that will be of lasting nature and will stand as a worthy memorial of Canada's one- hundredth birthday--with the following types to be considered: (a) the acquisition and construction of buildings, parks and other capital works. (b) the restoration of buildings of historical or archi- tectural merit. (c) the writing and publishing of books--composition of musical works, and creation and completing of paintings and sculpture and other works of art .... A project will not be approved unless it can be shown that it has a reasonable prospect of completion by the time of the Centennial observance. A muni- cipality must clearly indicate its plans for permanent- ly maintaining in good condition the completed project before approval will be given to an applica- tion. The act may be read in full at the town office and it is hoped many suggestions will be offered for con- sideration by council . The above does not refer to any celebration of the occasion but the lasting memorial. LOCAL RINK WINS MEN'S BONSPIEL There were twenty rinks--from White River, Ter- race Bay, Schreiber and Rossport, entered in the men's open bonspiel played last weekend. The win- ners were:- Ist event, J.McCuaig, T.McCuaig, B. Harper, W.Forsyth with R.Niemi, E.Niemi, P. Doig and C.Pearson as runner-up: 2nd Event, Bert McGoey, H.Legault, M.Hubilet, A.Bull with H.Burgess, J.Hawke, T.Hogan and A.Dunne the runner-up rink. Third event was taken by Ed.Holmes, A.Slater, G. Thrower, H.Spikula - with D.Wilkinson T.Webb, R.MacCuaig and O. Strasser, runner-up. A.W. Slater was chairman of the bonspiel and throughout the games there was a good audience with refreshments served by the women's club. DAY OF PRAYER TO BE OBSERVED The World Day of Prayer will be held in St. Andrew's United Church on Friday, February 14th at 3p.m. The. young groups of the church will hold their prayer service on Monday, February 17th, beginning at 7 p.m. Rev. Fraser Muldrew began a series of Lenten Ser- vices at the February 9th morning service which was featured by a special hymn sung (Cont'd Page 8) The whole town went to the high school grounds Chery! Sharon A Spring Hat Show was sponsored by the Busy Bees "given by the United Church Women on February 8th 'QUEEN' SHARON JARVA REIGNS AT CARNIVAL this week to admire the exceptionally well-done ice carving done by the students to mark their carnival day, February 7th. The judges, Rev. R.J.S.Inshaw, Father J.M.Cano and Rev. Fraser Muldrew awarded first prize to grade ten for their sphinx, second to grade eleven for the igloo and penguins and third to grade nine for a monster white whale. There was also a valentine group of heart, pierced by an arrow and offset by cupid, and a snow queen's throne, also the school emblem - an owl. The day was filled with games, a human dog race (the student's favorite), hockey, bowling, volley- ball, and the Ice Ball in the evening when Sharon Jarva was crowned queen with Muriel Nesbitt and polled 18,000 votes. The funds derived from the day, $180, are being sent to Care of Canada. HAT SHOW AND VALENTINE TEA ENJOYED of St.John's Anglican Church on Friday and Saturday evenings with refreshments served during intermission. Sixty-five gay bonnets were displayed by models Mesdames W.G.Furlonger, R.Krause, J.Whitton, W.Miller, R.Morrill, T.Graham and A.MacFadyen. Mrs.Gladys Madigan was commentator and Mrs. J. Winters the convenor. Shoes, gloves, purses and scarves were also shown and the make-up done by Mrs.G.Keating and Mrs. K .Williamson. Mrs.J.Corbett was in charge of the accessory counter and tea was served by the Mesdame J.Bryson (president), D.May, G.Birch, D .Weberg, R.Turner, W.Collinson, R.Ellicotte and N .Bottomley Mrs. George J.Scott convened a Valentine tea with Mrs.A.Gordon receiving. The tea table was centred with white mums inter- spersed with red velvet hearts and lacy white leaves and tea was poured by Mrs. F.Macadam and Mrs.N. Smith, Mrs.O.Niemi and Mrs. M.McCouan. The servitors were Mesdames H.McCanna, L. Christie, S.Petrushak, B.Simon, V.Weaver and Miss Joan Neil. Mrs. W.Gerow, Mrs. H.Miller and Mrs. W.Weaver replenished. Mrs. R.Wood and Mrs. Neil Ross looked after the bake table and Mrs.H.W. Gellert was cashier.
