at 7 i K.C. PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST The Knights of Columbus, 9t. Edward's Council #3554, held their 6th annual public speaking contest for students of Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Nip=-Red Rock High Schools in the Schreiber High School auditorium on January 31st. Al bert Cadieux, Dist. Deputy, welcomed the audience, explaining that the occasion represented one phase of the K of C's youth activities sponsored each year. The student response each year has well- repaid the Committees, their speeches show ing that much preparation has gone into the choice of topic and its presentation. Bruce Cosgrove was M.C. for the program intro~ ducing the speakers:- Junior Group - Carlo Spadoni, "Plight of the Canadian Indians"; Crystal Kusik, "Evolution" - both of Schreiber; Doug Cosby, "Pope John XXII1; Gail Conrad, "John Fitzgerald Kennedy" .B.T.B. and Christine Clime, "Crisis in Panama" - all of Marathon; Fred Erickson, "The Stars"; Lita Marie Boudreau, "Tour of the White House" - both of Ter- race Bay; "Rusty" Evans, "Photography "of Nip-Red Rock. Senior Group:- Maureen Cornell, "Auto- mation"; Russ Smith "Atomic Power - master or ser- vant" = of Schreiber; Irene Uzicanin, "New Frontier in Canada - our Canadian North"; Don Colborne, "Population Explosion in the world and possible ef- fect" both of Terrace Bay; Rosemary Shelat "Juvenile Delinquency" of Marathon and Herb Jones "Adver- tising" of Nip-Red Rock. The judges, J.B.McLeod, Marathon, Walter Mc- Micking, Terrace Bay and Rev. Sister Frances Joseph, Schreiber, used the following point system in making their obviously difficult decisions in naming winners:- subject matter, suitability and ori- ginality, 10; preparation and organization, 20; de- livery, platform manner, poise, posture and person- ality, 10; voice, enunciation, pronunciation, quality and range, 20; language, effectiveness of vocabulary, grammatical usage and sentence variety, 20; overall impression, sincerity, enthusiasm, force- fulness, audience appeal, 20. In the Junior class the winners were - Doug Crosby first; Christine Clime, second; in the Senior - Herb Jones, first and Don Colborne, second. Doug Crosby and Herb Jones received a trophy each to be placed in their schools and, in addition, a miniature replica of the trophy for themselves. They also were presen- ted with personal gifts and small tokens of apprecia~ tion were given to all entrants. Mel Nicol, Grand Knight, and Sanford Chicoine, Committee Chairman, made the presentations. Anna Fummerton was pianist for the occasion. W.G.Furlonger,L.R «McCuaig-Photo by | .McCuaig. The local Committee, East Thunder Bay Tuber- culosis Association held a meeting in Mr. & Mrs. L.R. McCuaig's home last Wednesday evening with Mrs. W. G. Furlonger, president, in charge. Minutes of the last meeting and a lengthy corres- pondence file were read by Mrs. N.A. McCuaig. The resignations of Walter Sheehan, who has been Hon. treasurer for the past four years, and Mrs. Sheehan, vice-president this year, were accepted with regret. L.R. McCuaig agreed to fill out Mr. Sheehan's position until the spring annual meeting. Also accepted with regret was Mrs. W. Lidkea's resignation as chairman, social service and rehabili- tation committee. Insurance was increased on office supplies and equipment. Miss Stock of the district Sanitorium, wrote thanking the E.T.B.A. for visits made to patients and for comforts and Christmas gifts provided. Dr. Scott, Supt. wrote concerning replacement of a radio originally donated by this committee. It was decided funds would not permit this. Word was re- ceived that the committee is not financially res- ponsible for patients living in unorganized areas although within the district, this being taken care of by the O.T.A., nor is it to be billed for drugs used by patients on post San care. Case finding report, September to December 1963- Xrays = Beardmore, 33; Schreiber, 17; District San. 32; Geraldton, 88; Terrace Bay, 49; Hornepayne, 2; Marathon, 30; Nipigon, 36..- 287 Xrays plus strep- tomycin, costs $458.25. A visit was made to the San in November. Tuberculin testing was done in January and protoderm has been ordered.
