EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME LOCAL MEETING HELD ON SCHOOL SAFETY PATROLS Mr, T,0,Poole, Accident Prevention Organ~. izer of the Ontario Dept. of Transport, Highway Safety Branch, was guest speaker on Wednesday evening, August 23rd, to a meeting of school Board and public officials inter- ested in the formation of a school safety patrol in Terrace Bay. Present at the meeting were Mr. A. Vali- quette and Mr, J.Marcella, representing the Separate School Board.- Mr. H,Hall, High School Board ~- Mr, A,Hartman, High' School Principal, ~ Mr. J,Beddard, Public School Board and Chief Billings of the local Police. Two informative films were shown by Mr, Poole, followed by a discussion period during which local problems were discussed. Mr. Poole advised that it was usual to appoint three boys or girls for each post enabling them to spell each other off each wad or oftener and also that two crossings of High- way 17 be set up within the Town, The Dept. of Highways, as soon as possible after the formation of these patrols, would then instal crosswalks and the appropriate signs at each post. The formation of 'these patrols will also institute a safety within the schools whereby children will be taught the proper way to cross streets and highways with or without. patrol supervision; the safest routes to and from school and other ' related topics. The training of these » patrols would be carried out under the strict supervision of the Highway Safety Branch, local police and an appointed teacher. Mr. Poole emphasized the fact that these patrols do not act as traffic officers but remain on the curbs at all times, only allow- ing children to cross when a safe gap in traffic appears and that they are on duty for short intervals of 10 to 15 (Gunttd P.9) RI NN OE NNR A EN eR tl LAISOUR DAY_MESSAGE Labour Day commemorates the achievements of the Canadian working force. One of our greatest accomplishments is. the . important part we have played in setting new safety records in industry. The greatest tribute that can be paid to the spirit of this national holiday is to celebrate 'it with a new safety record off the job, The opening of the Trans-Canada Highway has increased the traffic hazard in our com- munity. The number of traffic accidents, resulting in several deaths, and the 'near drownings that have occurred near our town this summer are a warning that extra care and caution must be taken if we are to stop these needless accidents, If your Labour Day weekend' includes a pic- nic, swimming, boating, fishing or'an auta~ mobile tour to see the sights along the Circle Route, remember and heed the message that the safety signs in our community stress "Safety Everywhere - all the time," Labour Day' was never intended to be a sac- rificial rite, And it doesn't have to be so. Let's make the Labour Day holiday the safest one yet and be our brothers keeper. . Signed ~ Pulp Sulphite and Paper' Mill Workers, Local 665, A. Valiquette, President.
