BICYCLE SAFETY RODEO The first bicycle safety rodeo held on Saturday, May 27th in the Terrace Bay Arena was a tremendous success, Nearly a hundred school children took part riding their bicyc~ les through the very difficult obstacle courses which were designed to test their riding ability. Each bicycle was thoroughly inspected by Constables H, Billings and C, Simmer and it was noted that. 9% of bicycles had defective brakes and only 14% were equipped with a head light. Five judges awarded each contestant points in the Safety Rodeo with the maximum of 74 points for a perfect score, Following are the list. of winners in the three age groups, and the prize award received Junior Group - up to and including 8 years lst - Lewis Cornwall - combination : horn and head light; 2nd - Billy Brend --- doublé kick stand; 3rd - Nora Bishop - Mud guard flaps; 4th - William Hartman - pair plastic streamer grips; 5th --- Werner Hermes - pair _ plastic streamer grips. : Intermediate Group - ages 9, 10 and ll. S, EDITORS FETED IN TERRACE BAY It was a stimulating experience to meet and talk with some of the Editors travelling on a tour arranged by the Ontario Department of Travel & Publicity, The bus arrived in Ter- race Bay on Tuesday afternoon and its passen- gers were greeted by the Chairman of the Commerce Committee, F,.0,Soughton. Head table guests introduced by Mr,Soughton were Bruce E, Layman of Warren, Indiana, Colin McDonald of the Dept,of Travel & Publicity, J. Heenan, Deputy Reeve, R.G,Shirriff, Mill Man- ager, L,Crandlemire, Area Manager of Ontario Hydro, G,E.McKinnon, District Forrester from Geraldton and S,Hodgkiss, Pres. of the Ont, Federation of Anglers & Hunters, Mr,.Soughton, who had given details of the development of the Community in an earlier greeting, introduced J,Heenan who, on behalf of the Township, greeted the visitors and spoke on Municipal Government in Terrace Bay from 1947 to the present, One question asked was "Can a Reeve fix a parking ticket?" R.G,Shirriff outlined the progress and development of the Mill and Townsite from its inception in the early 40's to the present, mentioning that $50,000,000 was sperit by Kim- berly-Clark Company in the project and quotin figures such as the annual payroll (in excess of $3,000,000) -.weekly payments to the C.P.R, of approximately'60,000, for incoming and out- going freight, etc,, and the substantial amounts spent on Hydro Utilities -- all major factors in the economy of the district, _ The Aguasabon Hydro develop: (Cont'd P,13)
