DISTRICT ORATORICAL CONTEST HELD LAST FRIDAY The North Shore Oratorical Contest was held Friday evening, November 27th in the Terrace Bay High School Auditorium with Mr. Jack Stokes as Master of Ceremonies. This is one of the many projects the Knights of Columbus, St.Edwards! Council 3554 sponsor 'to further educational interests in students, Mr. Stokes introduced the gentlemen on the stage with him, Mr.Colin McGrath, Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus , St.Edwards Council, Mr.Mel Nicol, Grand Knight and Mr, Sanford Chicoine, Chairman of Youth Activitie Judges for the contest were Mrs. Clarence Buck of Terrace Bay, Mr. Joe Douglas of Herron Bay and Mr, Robert Skinner of Schrei- ber, Mr.Nicol spoke a few words of welcome on behalf of the St.Edwards' Council. Mr,Stokes also thanked the principals of each of the High Schools for their support of the Con- test - Mr. D,A,Locking of Terrace Bay, Mr, S. Korchuk of Schreiber, Mr. W.S.Perkins of Nipigon-Red Rock and Mr, M.Riddell of Mara- thon, He outlined the points awarded to each contestant - material 30 points, style 10 points, language 20 points and delivery 40 points, Mr. Ray Kenney was the official timer who gave each contestant a two-minute warning on deadline, The Junior Division of contestants appear- ed first to speak on "Would Disarmament Bring World Peace", Jim Hayes and Bonnie-Jean Wilson represented Terrace Bay High School. From Schreiber High School came Brenda Lid- kea and Jack Gordon. Amy-Marie Simpson rep- resented the Junior Division from Nipigon- Red Rock and another Nipigon-Red Rock student, James Farrell, one of last year's winners, followed his classmate with the same snave delivery which won for him the Trophy. From Marathon came Judy Shand who spoke of the hopes of the world on the forthcoming Summit talk$ next spring. The Judges decision in the Junior Group were - lst Prize James Farrell and 2nd prize Amy-Marie Simpson - both representing Nipigon Red Rock, Continuing the contest into the Senior 'Division Ray Guillet appeared first for Schreiber High School, The next Schreiber student was Lois Inshaw who was followed by Mary Reed of Nipigon-Red Rock, Kenny McLellan was the second contestant from Nipigon-Red Rock, P Ron Cosgrove and Jeannette Langis repre- sented Marathon High School in this group.
