Misuse of flammable liquids, Careless Smoking and Matches Careless smoking and the careless use of matches are chief among fire hazards, These are responsible for 1 out of 4 home fires --- yet a few simple precautions may guard against them, Smoking -- Never smoke in bed. Likewise if you feel at all drowsy in a chair while smoking put the "smoke" out, ~ Use only noncombustible ash trays that are of adequate size and designed to prevent lighted cigarettes from falling out, ~ Never empty ash trays with smoldering cigarettes, cigars or pipe ashes in a wastebasket. - Before going to bed, check all rooms to make sure no one has left a cigarette, cigar or pipe burning anywhere, Matches and Lighters - Children and lighters or matches don't mix. Lighters and matches should be kept where children cannot reach them. Keep "strikeanywhere" matches in a covered metal container on a high shelf and avoid leaving "book" matches where tiny hands can play with them. - It is a dangerous practice to use matches for illumination in attics, closets or Similar dark spots. - When you discard a match be sure that it has stopped smoking and is out.
