SOFTBALL NEWS Thursday, August 1/57 - Shift 3-4 vs. Teen Town, Shift 3-4 scored 2 runs in hi Tth inning to break a 2-2 tié' and eke out a close 4-2 decision over a fighting een Town nine. , Shift 3-4 took a 1-0 lead in the lst on a single by Zebrowski: and incr- eased it to 2-0 in the 2nd on a:single by Weaver. Teen Town then tied it up as Jack Marsh singled in a run in-the 2nd and Lang scored in the 5th on an error. Shift 3-4 then managed the' 2 winning runs in the 7th when with 2 out, Whalen and Kurylo walked and Joe Butler singled in Whalen. Weaver then got on through an error to fill the bases and Kurylo scored as Aho walked. SHift 3-4 then held Teen Town scoreless to preserve the win. The game proved to be a pitcher's battle with the batters 6n each side being stifled and hits scarce. For Shift 3-4, Whalen turned in a superb pitching job on the mound as he allowed but 4 scratch hits and scored the winning run to aid his own cause, Weaver paced the attack as he banged out 2 hits, For Teen Town, Thompson performed well on the mound as he allowed but 6 hits. However, his mates did not provide him with enough runs to bring a win. H. a 4 Friday, August 2/57 -- Shift 1 vs. Shift 3h. Making the most of their hits, Shift 3-4 exploded for 6 runs in the 2nd inning to score enough runs to coast to a 7-2 victory over Shift 1. The loss served to raise Shift 1's winless streak to 10 conse-~ cutive games and to almost throw their play ' off hopes out the window. Shift 3-4 started slowly with a single run in the lst and then collected 6 more runs as a result of Zebrowski's grand slam homer in the 2nd to take a 7-0 lead, Shift 1 came back in the latter 2 innings to score 2 runs but their efforts were too late and not enough, For Shift 3-4, Zebrowski paced the attack with his big 4-bagger while Wainikka cont'd. next column) Page 9 cracked out 2 hits, Aho on the mound per- formed well as he scattered 8 hits for the win while receiving excellent support from his mates. ; For Shift 1, Wilf Butler after taking over for Brassard on the mound pitched well but the damage had already been done. Shift 3-4 took an early 1-0 lead in the lst as Desrosiers singled in Lang. Shift 1 bounced back in the 4th with 2 runs to go ahead by a close 2-1 score, but Shift 3-4 tied it up in the sixth as Lang singled in Zielke. At the end of the regulation 7 innings the score was tied and this necessitated extra innings. With the bases loaded in the 8th, Blom drove in 2 runs and Brassard one to give Shift 1 a 5-2 lead. They then blanked Shift 3-4 to take the win. For Shift 1, Blom banged out 2 hits and collected 3 R.B.I.'s to lead the attack while Zigman also had 2 hits. Wilf Butler on the mound tiirled a neat game as he allowed but 5 hits.vor Shift 1, it was a good all round effort as each player turned in an inspired game.
