For that reason and in order to keep the members better informed the chairman is going to attempt a colum beamed at those who hold membership cardin the Recreation Association. It is hoped that. all members will read this column and give us any suggestions for other material which they would like to see printed. First of all something which has bothered us considerably-~----and that is some of you feel that you do not have representation on the committee because members are not being elected by your majority vote. - Most recreation committees are appointed by the Municipal council and that is-exactly how your committee is formed. Even though most recreation committees, including yours, are appointed you must still feel that the members have been put on there to repres- ent you and to maintain your interests, It is your recreation committee and all of the members are obligated to help you-out in any recreational problem. You must also remember of course that a recreation committee must also bear in mind the interest of the taxpayers and this is the fine balancing noe which is so hard to find. That is, to maintain the right balance between a good program and a fair tax rate. For instance, we have decided this year that except a an exceptional cir- cumstance due to a $20,000 deficit that we will not be able to give an actual Bran to adult groups, Cash grants of - (Cont. on next hae Page 3 YOUR RECREATION COMMITTEE (Cont. ) s 200.00 each have been given to minor hockey and little league ball and assist- ance is given to other activities for children and teenagers where they are not able to earn their own funds, Established adult groups which are able to support themselves have been given repayable loans in order to start them off to a successful season. Examples of this are the baseball team and the softball association, All we ask of these groups is that they keep proper books and submit an annual statement. Any member of the committee will be glad to answer questions on this policy. We have just recently placed an order for $800.00 worth of roller skates and 'expect to start this activity in early May. It is also planned to let the ice go in the arena on April 18th (just after Easter holidays) and in the curling rink on April 25th. Usage this year will determine future policy on this. Once again let us hear your comments on the whole program and anything in particular which you would like to see covered in this colum which will appear from time to time as material warrants Ate Chairman Vice-Chairman M.
