SMELTS SOON?? (Cont.) for size. He's a slender, silvery fellow with minute, loose scales, a sharply formed tail and a mouthful of tiny, sharp teeth. He looks something like a cisco or lake herring except for the larger mouth armed with the teeth, Maximum size is about 1, inches and weight around eight ounces. Some ardent smelters claim, by the way, that the little fish smell like cucumbers, ' The flesh has a fine flavour but a hearty meal requires a lot of smelt. Some of the rangers of the Department of Lands and Forests claim that one should cook 65 fish for each hungry person, That may be an exagger-- ation, but it is a fact that the average diner can dispose of a dozen smelt without much effort, 0-0-0 SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING MARCH 30TH _ The annual meeting of the Terrace Bay Amateur Softball Asseciation will be held on Wednesday, March 30th, at 7:00 pem., in the small meeting room ~ at the Recreation Centre, All those interested in seftball are urged to attend. CHAMPION~ SHIP After a see-saw series which went down to the seventh and final game, the Marathon Mercuries captured the Therien trophy, emblematic of the North Shore Hockey League Championship, by defeating the Nipigon Flyers 5-0, The first period of this game was very fast and wide epen with Marathon netting two goals, Play slowed somewhat in the Second, with both teams cheeking close, but Marathon managed to score two more goals to make the score read 4-0, In the third period Marathon seemed contented to coast along and hold their lead, while at the same time they checked the Nipigon team to a stand- still, and scored the fifth and final goal of the game, Standouts for Marathon were their front line of Charyna, Amadeo and Henderson, while Ruth in the Nipigen goal was the star of the game, After the game the trophy was presented to Phil Morgan, captain of the Mercuries, by Archie James, North Shore League President, The Mercuries now meet the Port Arthur Beverage team in a best of five series commencing on Thursday, March 17, 1955, 2nd and 3rd games on Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th. 0-0-0
