~bOnvTic ULTURAL SOCIETY Mr. Fred Parish of the Port Arthur Horticultural Society spent a very busy day in Terrace Bay last Saturday when he visited many of the gardens of the Society's members here, His tour of the townsite was followed up in the evening by a meeting in the Activity Room of the High School at which he detailed to the attending group full procedure for ore ganizing a local branch, - At present Ter- race Bay is lacking in five members only to form its own group. aes The Ontario Government makega yearly grant of $20,000, to the Ontario Horti- cultural Society, which is then divided among all the Societies according to the amounts they have expended, Each new Chapter will rec@ive 50¢ per member (not in excess of $75.00) in their first year. The fee to become a member is only $1.00 a year. Of this sum 5¢ is spent on affiliation and in return, an average of 37¢ is received back. As an inducement to larger memberships, premiums are given each year, Mr, Parish suggested Terrace Bay use the same premiums as either Fort William or Port Arthur, and so cash in on their buying power through purchasing in larger quantitics., Last year ten gladiolia bulbs were given with cach membership which wotld have cost 2200 to purchase privately. He also suggested that if a local branch were started, memberships would be sold for 1955 as we could hardly become organized this year, Mr, Parish pointed out that in Fort William the Society is seeding and caring for the shrubbery around the Public Library as their public service, He suggested a project for Terrace Bay would. be the beautificat:.on of the new Cemetery, and added that the Society would supply us with suitable trees for planting. An informal discussion followed the business meeting, on the mutual problems of Terrace Bay gardening, with Mr, Parish giving first-hand information, having created a garden of beauty himself from the sandy slopes on which his home was built. He felt we should not be dis- couraged with the relatively few who are interested at present. One person working on his garden, will in turn infect his neighbor until it spreads throughout the town. Mr. Parish ended by thanking Mr, and Mrs, Ab Farrow who had entertained him during his visit, and announced he would be guite willing to come down at (Cont. on next col,) of 200 persons -has been set, Peco 8 : HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (Cont.) any time again that his presence was required, Mr, Farrow thanked him sincerely for visiting Terrace Bay and the help he had given to so many. 0-0-0 SCOUT SILVER ARROWHEAD CAMP AT WHITE SAND LAKE - Terrace Bay bids welcome to some forty Boy Scouts and their leaders now under canvas at the Terrace Bay Scout Camp on White Sand Lake, These boys from as far west.as Kenora and as far east as Marathon are taking partin a leadership for senior Scouts, The camp leader for the week period is Mr, C.
